all my spinning rods have low riders.. was thinking about having one reel with mono (daiwa emblem with the big spool)... would it work, or be a pain?

If you give a man a fish, he will eat for a day. But, if you teach a man to fish, he will spend all his money on fishing tackle and won't be able to afford to eat!

if they are set up lowrider style which is usually going out 47-49 inches from the reel stem for braid and if you use mono they should be ok.. seing as they are out far enough to not choke down the huge mono cone to much to soon. which would cause line slap and eats off your finish both on your threads and the blank finish pretty fast.. but yeah if they are out there they should work ok.. just have to cast it and see. the heavier the mono usually the bigger the cone comming off the spool and if you are using a big spool say like a 706z size the cone gets pretty large comming off it with 20 lb mono and if its choked down to fast it grows more as the cone tries to pass the guide and line going through it.. it sounds like pffffft as you cast..

When we did teh Test casting gathering in 2004, 17# mono on a 9' rod with a size 25 stripper set up "dual purpose" actually outcasted braid on a traditional 40-30-etc set up by a good 25-30 feet on a 220' cast.

I've used my 13'-2" AS1507 with lowriders in casting tournaments for the 100gm. I throw a Shimano PowerAero spinner with .28mm and .75 shocker.

It's noisy cwm31.gif but it works. tongue.gif

You can’t truly call yourself “peaceful” unless you are capable of great violence.  If you are incapable of violence, you are not peaceful, you are just harmless.

"The gathering guide for spinning reels on surf rods should be equal to one half the diameter (or greater ) of the reel spool...or the biggest Guide you can get ahold of according to Frank D"... I'd wager that based on performance, knowledge, and demand, FUJI and others will discontinue guides larger than a 30mm within 3 yrs...........cwm27.gif at 40mm and up.Stay small, test cast, i't'll work.
