mcurtiss
http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/1..._n_139729.html ABC News reports : In a conservative radio interview that aired in Washington, D.C. Friday morning, Republican vice presidential nominee Gov. Sarah Palin said she fears her First Amendment rights may be threatened by "attacks" from reporters who suggest she is engaging in a negative campaign against Barack Obama. Palin told WMAL-AM that her criticism of Obama's associations, like those with 1960s radical Bill Ayers and the Rev. Jeremiah Wright, should not be considered negative attacks. Rather, for reporters or columnists to suggest that it is going negative may constitute an attack that threatens a candidate's free speech rights under the Constitution, Palin said. "If [the media] convince enough voters that that is negative campaigning, for me to call Barack Obama out on his associations," Palin told host Chris Plante, "then I don't know what the future of our country would be in terms of First Amendment rights and our ability to ask questions without fear of attacks by the mainstream media." Salon's Glenn Greenwald explains why this argument is frighteningly wrong: If anything, Palin has this exactly backwards, since one thing that the First Amendment does actually guarantee is a free press. Thus, when the press criticizes a political candidate and a Governor such as Palin, that is a classic example of First Amendment rights being exercised, not abridged. This isn't only about profound ignorance regarding our basic liberties, though it is obviously that. Palin here is also giving voice here to the standard right-wing grievance instinct: that it's inherently unfair when they're criticized. And now, apparently, it's even unconstitutional. According to Palin, what the Founders intended with the First Amendment was that political candidates for the most powerful offices in the country and Governors of states would be free to say whatever they want without being criticized in the newspapers. The First Amendment was meant to ensure that powerful political officials would not be "attacked" in the papers. It is even possible to imagine more breathaking ignorance from someone holding high office and running for even higher office? "I'm not talkin' 'bout pleasure boatin'. I'm not talkin' 'bout day sailin'. I'm talkin' 'bout workin' for a livin'. I'm talkin' 'bout shahkin'!"
Raynman
I think the point is we do not have a free press. We have a lazy, partisan press. There is no longer anything approaching journalistic integrity in this country. No effort to report news. It's shill for this schmuck or that schmuck. This year is the worst I ever recall. What is nice about it is that at least the pretense is gone. No more Dan Rather, Walter Cronkite veiled partisanship. It's now Sean "So, Sarah, aren't all of these attacks on you completely unfair" Hannity and Chris, a shudder up my leg" Matthews. I don't want guernseybass to see this, but the BBC puts out more accurate, meaningful unspun information on real issues affecting most americans than the entire US newsmedia combined. Ditch Jigger
She was probably a big fan of the Alien and Sedition Acts, too. Scratch that--I have a few bucks that says she never heard of them "…if catching fish is your only objective, you are either new to the game or too narrowly focused on measurable results.” - D. jesbion
You can say what you want, but most viewers recognize the bias in reporting...and their ratings and often, their entire broadcast is going to fall to pieces because people are getting tired of their BS... Yet, if you talk of talk radio.....then you can turn everything around...that's why the Dems want the BS "fairness doctrine" in radio! But radio has much less coverage and viewers than TV ..... Is that why Sarah`s ratings have been dropping steadily the longer she has been out there? Or why many Republicans and Consrervatives have turned away from McCain and Palin with many now supporting Obama? John Purser
Palin is certainly consistent. From the day McCain selected her to today every time she's opened her mouth it's left me dumbfounded saying "You have GOT to be kidding!!!" I was wrong every time. Of all the preposterous assumptions of humanity over humanity, nothing exceeds most of the criticisms made on the habits of the poor by the well-housed, well-warmed, and well-fed. - Herman Melville
fishman
Something Palin should read: AMENDMENT I Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. Fishman --Give a man a fish and he'll eat that day. Teach a man to fish and he'll call in sick.
