ABEC 7 bearings

I recently purchased an ABU with ABEC 7 bearings. I know the bearings are built to tighter tolerances....what I want to know is what, if any, special service do these bearings require.

You want to take care not to lube them with any oil or grease. Look for high performance reel lubes.....I am familiar with Rocket Oil.

Do not know the answer to that, but , Red Rocket oil is clear.I replaced the bushings in my Abu7000 with those bearings, and now there is a BIG improvement in spool speed. Cleaned the bearings with lighter fluid, dried them, added the oil,and put them in the reel, now I can't wait until spring to take it for a spin!

Thanks guys, I'll give the Red Rocket Oil a shot. I guess the reason I shouldn't use "regular" lubes is because of the tight tolerances, correct? They probably wouldn't lube up correctly. Thanks again!

P.S. Does the same hold true for ABEC 3's?

I posted that supplier to give you guys an idea of what the correct product was. I can not vouch for their reliability as merchants.

I don't know what you mean by "regular lubes", but any grease or heavy oil will rob performance even on the ABEC 3's.

That's what I figured....that the heavier lubes would slow down the bearings too much. I guess it's off to the Hatteras Outfitters site for the Rocket Oil. Thanks again! smile.gif

Abec 7 not always the way to go, tighter tolerance means more maintenance, and many times they don't spin as fast as abec 3 or even the stock bearings. Speakin of GOS, hey grandpa, you ever convert a surfmaster to bearings like a squidder, I got a real clean one, like to hot rod it...

PS: if you check with Tres Irby you'll see they charge more for hand picked set of stock bearings than they do for Abec's...

forget trying to convert the surfmaster, too much of a pita to do.i use standard penn bearings in my squidders altho i should get set measurement and see if a local or boca has them in 7 grade.im staying wih chrysler atf,its made for hi heat and hydraulic bearing apps,if you want to play with 14$ a tube refined and filtered out 40-60 weight oil then do a comparison and drag out your tape measuers for the casts.no diff in yardage.just no dye.clean the bearings with quikstart ether spray 3-4 times to get the old fish oil out, lettem dry and soakem an workem in a cap of oil of your choice, spin off excess and have at it.break free clp works good too if your a teflon junkie and want ater spool speeds.

Thanks grandpa, guess it be best to leave the surfmaster as is, maybe just mag it, the thing has a good spool spin on the bushings anyway...guy once told me best way to lube bushings is to drop in pan of oil, heat on stove until oil smokes, remove, cool, reassemble...any truth to that or is my wife gonna yell at me for nothing when she see's atf cookin in her good saucepot!

>>Does Red Rocket oil equal Automatic transmission fluid?????

No, and by far.

I have used ABEC-7 bearings. My impression is that the higer ratings do not have a measurable impact on casting performance under actual fishing conditions.

Best wishes.
