Shadow box railing

I am really proud of myself. I have to fix up my deck to meet code specifictions and decided that a new railing done in shadow box style would be nice. I got some prices from some local repair folks and I almost $hit myself.icon25.gif

So, off I go to Homie's with a long list of needed items. Already have the miter saw and cordless drill and all of the other little items necessary. Had to get deck screws, wood etc.

Well, today I put in 9 hours and got 3/4 of the project done and it looks just as good as if one of the repair guys would have done it. Even strenghtened the deck using some 3" deck screws. That SOB is stronger than when it was built.

Gonna' wait for Monday or Tuesday to finish the job. Have to go to a christening tomorrow around 1PM

I'll show some pics when it's finished.

Hey, you guys got to understand, tools have never been my forteredface.gif and my wife was amazed at the way it is coming out and the fact that i still have all my fingers intact after using that miter saw all day.cwm31.gif

I finished the job today, a great day to work outside. Not too bad, only three skinned fingers. I'll take some pictures tomorrow and put them up for whoever is interested.

It actually looks pretty damned good if I do say so myself.

I am really pooped from all the manual labor. Not used to that kind of stuff. Time to cwm33.gif

Congrats!

Keep up the manual labor, and you will feel 10 years younger come summertime.

I figured I should mention that shadowbox rails tend to collect wasp's nests. Watch for them and knock them off while there is still only one wasp and she is away.

The WORST deck project I ever did had literally dozens and dozens of wasp's nests under the rail. A separate nest under each board. I've never seen that many in such close vicinity. I thought they would fight or something, but I guess not.

Just a heads up, and a congratulations.

As promised, the following are pictures I took this morning of the repairs I undertook to the rail of my deck. Now I just need to clean all of the deck and waterproof/stain it all.

What do you guys think?
