First, welcome to the board. Its a great place to share and learn.

I've been using different braids for different types of fishing and my favorite knot is the Trilene knot tied with a double line. Double the line and tie the knot. The other knot I like is the Palomar. One of the problems with braid is that it cuts into itself so you need knots that have the line doubled - both of those do.

I join my leader to the braid using a swivel, but others use a direct connection.

Try the search function up top. These are a couple of links I found.

Tell us a little more about yourself in general. Are you in the Bay area? What reel are you using? If you are using an older reel, you may be happier with Fireline. Power Pro wraps well on the newer reels designed for it, but the older reels work better with Fireline. I was using a Diawa Emblem XT last year with Fireline and it worked great.

Animated Knots for Fly Fishing

rlm_gotknots.jpg Every once in a while it's nice to take a refresher course on knot tying. It's pretty easy to get caught up in only using one or two knots for every situation on the water-- as we all have our favorites. Now, there certainly isn't anything wrong with that if you can get away with it, and if it works for you, but I always enjoy and encourage learning something new about fly fishing and challenging myself to stretch the boundries a little. With that said, I often find myself going back to this great resource I found years ago at Orvis to refresh my memory on how to correctly tie several popular knots if I get rusty, or want to add a new knot to my menu. Perhaps you have also discovered this animated knot tying "how-to"? In that case correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't believe there to be a better one on the internet (at least to my knowledge). For those of you that are looking for a great way to learn a new knot to apply to your next troutdoor adventure, let me recommend the Animated Knot Series at Orvis. It has every knot you need to know and will instruct you how to tie it in steps that you control. This is one of those "bookmark worthy" links, be sure to save it!

If you fly fish dry flies for trout, than most likely you use Al Troth's Elk Hair Caddis or some form of it. Mr. Troth is responsible for creating the famous Elk Hair Caddis dry fly (and several others) -- possibly one of the most effective dry fly patterns ever invented.

The EHC is one of my favorite dry fly patterns, I consider it the perfect dry fly for several reasons-- but mostly because I have caught more trout on this fly (and it's several variations) time and time again (hatch or no hatch). I found this video extremely fascinating and I really enjoyed Al and his son Eric Troth's commentary -- and I'm sure you will too! Much respect to Mr. Troth for his ingenious additons to our wonderful sport -- Thank you Al!

I just tried the new stren knot. Mono to braid= same as uni to uni except that the uni is only tied on the mono side, on the braid side tie an improved clinch. It seems to hold up well.

That is a reverse albright or worm knot. It works well. Check out the Prower Pro web site for lots of good super braid knots...

I have lots of braid 'issues' also and I have been screwing with them for a year now.

Thanks! Now I know the name of the knot I have been using for years is the Palomar. Fastest and easiest of all to tie, and retains 100% of the un-knotted line strength, I'm told.

For tying modern braid to mono an albright or improved albright knot works very nicely. For light lines the simple albright is very easy to tie and is the best one I've found yet. I use it to tie my mono shock leader to braided main line. I fish my souped up ABU 5601 with 8lb Triplefish Bully Braid with a 17lb mono shock leader about 2 1/2 times the length of my rod as often as not. This knot dresses down very nicely and passes through the rod guide without any hitches at all. I use about 9 wraps, then tease it down very carefully.

Lately, I've been using uni-to-uni (or back to back uni's) for my mono-spectra connection. For big tuna fishing (60lb gear and up) I use double the spectra using a 20 wrap bimini and use a 20 wrap albright on spectra with the mono or flouro.

good luck
