Original Abu 5230 bearing

Rate this topic

I am seeking a source for the original part no. 5230

SS ball bearing, 3x10x4 with the rounded shoulder.

old_5230.jpg

This bearing is marked ADR - France, W623SP2ZZ

or W623SP2Z.

I recently rebuilt an old 6500C and tried to use the

newer 3x10x4 bearing w/ the square shoulder but the

results was very noisy. Even with new pinion and main

gear. I noticed that the spool housing on the right sideplate

was not perpendicular to the sideplate, indicating that it

may have been damaged and caused a problem. When I

used the old rounded shoulder bearings the noise went away.

This leads me to believe the old rounded bearings allows

the bearing to be perpendicular to the spool shaft and not

to the spool housing on the sideplate.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Jerry

The bearing with the "rounded shoulders" is a self-aligning type. I'll leave it to you to ponder as to why they used this type. You've already discovered that you need to replace it with a like kind

Butcher,

Thanks for the reply and correcting me on the

term "self-aligning". It"™s what I am talking about.

I believe that they were used in the first/original "C"

models of the '70"™s when the machining/assembly

was not as precise as it is today, to allow for slight

imperfections/tolerances of the time. Even the bronze

bushings of the non "C" models of the '70"™s were "self-

aligning".

I do a lot of restoration/service of these old reels but

have only recently discovered why the self aligning

bearings/bushings were used. They do make a difference.

I use the newer square bearings in these old reels and

most of the time the results are good. But sometimes

no matter what I do with new bearings/gears, the noise

is always there.

I don"™t think these self-aligning bearings would make much

difference in the newer ultra cast reels, with the bearings

in the spool. The spool shaft doesn"™t have much resistance

in the side plate housing.

It"™s all about precision and tolerances, IMO, which are better

today than they were 30 yrs ago.

Thanks Jerry

Seajay, How's things going?

I'm not saying that Boca or other bearing suppliers don't

have these bearings but I have never seen them on their

sites for fishing reel bearings. Maybe I need to question

them. Thanks for your reply.

Jerry

And before the posts come in on why drag up old threads: That's what web searches for images bring up... the pic, and the web site. Click the site, and whatever it is, it is. :). Jerry did you find any out there? Thx, KD.

Coincidentally I'm looking for a pair of these as well. 6 years SOMEONE has to have found a source. :D

Hi.... All I have are really good used ones..I think about 6 is it. I am going to send Jerry a note. To see if he found a supplier of fresh goods. There's a brg house in NJ called AST, and I have query in to them as well....awaiting their reply.

The timeline of this thread was prior to the dedicated reel repair forum, so I will link this thread in a thread over there. The main forum gets really busy.

Cheers, KD.

I ordered some drag washers and a schematic from PureFishing for an ABU 8600 Striper Drag reel from 1975 and they had them! This is the phone number they gave me to call when ordering the parts: "Please call us at 1-800-228-4272 if you wish to obtain these reel parts". May be worth giving them a call for the bearing you need.
