We are going to do a trial run for 3 months starting in March of 48-on / 72-off. Do any of you work that schedule, pro's, con's, opinions? I am pretty apprehensive because I have been doing 24-on / 24-ff for the past almost 19 years.

I think the FD are the only guys who work those types of hours?....off the top of my head...i would say...CON-48 hours of the same crew can get annoying...might get burnt out...you will have to plan ahead for your normal routine..PRO...thats 72 hours of free time..side work...time with the fam..or out on the town...Would be great free time to do a hobby...build cars or whatevea you dig..ya dig?

My Department switched from 3 days 0800-1800 on, 3 days off, 3 nights 1800-0800, 3 days off. We now do 24 on 72 off, which the majority of guys like better. Either way it was a forty two hour workweek. How many hours a week do you guys work?

Judging by the fire guys in my town that's a sweet deal , most of them have side business's and they live in the biggest houses and drive the nicest trucks....only if I were younger....not to forget the nice new 6 million dollar fire station they hang in.

The 48 hour on and 72 off sounds good on paper. But if your house is in a busy area your going to get burnt out. The better shift is 24 on, 24 off then 5 days off. With this shift your home life will not have such a break in it.

We work the Detroit schedule which is 24 on / 24 off, 24 on / 24 off, 24 on / 4 Days off. It averages out to be a 56 hour work week. The only other schedule that I've ever worked is the 24/48 and I didn't really care for it too much. It seemed as though you never got a break.

I work with FDNY and have the option of working a 24 or doing straight tours. Personally, I like the versatility. But if I did have to choose between doing 24's or 48's , 24's would be the way. 48's would seem to be way too long in the firehouse. Isn't there an OSHA regulation against working more than 24's in a row?

We just had a LT ordered into work for 5 and 1/2 days straight. My dept limits us to 36 hours straight, unless as in the LT's case they could not find another body. I started working 8-4 M-F last September when I made Asst. Chief after 25 years of shift work and I am having alot of trouble adjusting to "normal" life. My wife and kids aren't used to seeing me around so much, the nice thing is no more nights holidays or weekends. Where ya stationed in the City 121?

We still do (2) tens and (2) fourteens with four days off. Last time we voted on 24s only one person voted for it. Most of us feel we're too busy to do the 24s.
