Got my invite the other day. Count me in! Man.... how can I wait 9 more months?

Why did Bethany-Fenwick cancel? Did they also drop their spring tourney?

The Chamber's website has the Spring Tournament listed on May 12 as one of their events for 2007. Not sure why they dropped the fall event, one they've hosted for many years now. Perhaps the annual Fall Classic surf tournament which two of the local shops have been sponsoring on an adjacent weekend had cut into the attendance too much to make it worthwhile to continue.

Thanks for the info Bill.

I have fished the Fall Classic for many years and attendance on that one has always been great. I think that there were around 350 fisherpeople last year and it is supposedly limited to 500 this year w/ the promise of a big "Surprise".

After a little thought maybe they gave it up due to the probability of storms/hurricanes that late in the season. Last years' Bethany-Fenwick was cancelled due to a big blow and hi surf and they just had a drawing for the prizes.

Looks like the DMS prizes are a little better and they seem to mimic the payouts that are in the Fall Classic.

IMHO, the Chamber of Commerce just couldn't get it right. When Acie Mankins was running the show, there were lots of great prizes. You didn't have to catch a lot of fish, you just had to show up for the drawing during the awards ceremony and you had a good chance of getting a nice prize. Of course, Acie had many contacts in the sporting goods business but then Acie dropped out and the Chamber had neither the manpower nor the contacts to solicit good, quality prizes. I know there for awhile, the Chamber was purchasing the prizes themselves. I think the final straw came when, for the last several years, they went head to head with the Ocean City Team Tourney.

The Chamber tried very hard to make the Fall tourney go but it just didn't work out. I think the DMS taking it over is a very good thing. Acie will probably be back in there and they'll have the manpower of the DMS to draw from. I boycotted anything to do with fishing in DE last year but I may have to break the boycott and fish the DMS tourney this year.

It is my understanding that the Chamber of Commerce has to much on its plate, and a fishing tournament takes a tremendous amount of work to produce. They think their endeavors can be better served doing some other project.

As Chair of the DMS committee I can assure all anglers that we do have some surprises instore. The committee feels that we will do it right or not at all. If the tournament is canceled for any reason, entry fees will be returned. NO DRAWINGS.

The DMS sent out 1000 invitations. Those anglers have until July 1st to respond. If the tournament is not filled by that time, it will be open to the public. If you wish to be added to the invitation list send me an PM for instructions. Only 350 adult anglers will fish this tournament, because we don't want it crowded.
