John,

are all your other reels warrantees void if you open them up and start playing? there isnt much to them.. think of a 704 without any garbage parts/spring, etc on the inside.. as simple as you can get, add some seals and some small threads to hold things in place and thats it..

If the reel is older than a year isn't the warranty over anyway?

Sent mine in today. I've never been charged (knock on wood) anything more than the annual service and they've replaced all kinds of goodies in my 250 (shaft, bearings, gears, line rollers, drag clickers, the brass piece the spool cup screws into, etc.). The reels are sent in every year in December or January.

Its $39 for service ,$11 for shipping and to insure the reel, thats $50 a year to keep reels under warranty! I own 6 reels I know that sounds like over kill but I use every one of them. Its cheaper to run the reels to the ground and have them fixed when needed . I have sent reels to Van Staal and I had to send them back because they leaked oil. Even reels that were not leaking when I sent them out ,came back and leaked! I am going to try to service my own reels and pack them with grease instead of oil. There is no reason why these reels should'nt work like the 704s or old French reels. Dan at Van Staal said that they service some of the older reels with grease , and also will use grease instead of oil by request. I really believe in these reels , but I think Van Staal should include a parts list and diagram just like every other reel! Its like going to a car dealer for service , rip off!!! Also Van Staal never sends you back old parts they replaced!

Not true. I've gotten just about everything back except for seals and the main shaft.

I spoke to Dan when I got a charge for all the parts on my reel besides the labor for the $36.95 2 weeks ago. He told me this was the new policy and a letter will be going out to all to explain this. They got one more of my reels and this will be the last time I send them in annually. I got the tools and know how to service them but I don't got the parts. It was worth the money for the service you got then but not now. I got a machinist friend who can get parts or make them. He made my tools. biggrin.gif

I always send my reels back every year with the $36.95 service charge fee per reel, have always gotten my parts back, and never paid anything extra for drag washers, bearings, shafts, or shipping back to me.

The only time I paid for parts is when I didn't send my reels back one season. Then I had to pay for parts to get it back under warrenty. Since then, I've sent them back every year and have never had any problems or complaints.
