Since the oil spills in Buzzards bay all ship traffic is now monotored electronically entering and leaving the canal.

Any ship that inbound is given a course to follow to keep them away from the more shallow areas. If the ship violates the area that it is suppose to be in The elctronics will sound at the Army Corp and automatically will visually pin point the ship and the Captain will be notified of his error.

The system was put in place after the grounding by the oil barge that spilled oil into Buzzards bay and this situation , barring no failure of the new system will mean clean waters for every one.

With all this modern technology, the canal could be narrowed with new aprons to the water's edge providing a uniform casting surface for us older folk. The increase in current flow through the narrower passage will require 9 ounce jigs on the moon tides....enter the new Nanorod.....THE ONLY rod for the ageing populationbiggrin.gif

has such a rod now in graphite and it can handle up to 12. I have never used above 10 on it however. The Spidy flex was not configured to go that high , but who knows what can happen when engineering minds come together

unfortunatly, the tug escorts have been discontinued for the time being. seems the oil compaines fought the law which this state passed to require all single hull barges to have a tug escort while traversing the waters of buzzards bay up through the canal. the oil companies went to court and had the law thrown out b/c they have a deal with the feds that allows them a few more years before they must all come into compliance for double hull on all barges. problem was, the oil companies were picking up the tab for all those escorts and they didn't like that very much...

too bad really...the extra protection was a good thing in my mind.
