Reel for Flats

Folks,

What reel would you suggest for the Flats. Going after Snook and other species.

Abu 5500 Pro Rocket, Daiwa Luna 300 or a Calcutta 400TE?

Thanks,

Dave

i used to do it with a penn 4500 ss. spinning yes...

that was a long time ago.

my last 10 years of living in FL and fishing there was all on the flyrod.

i have the calcutta 401TE... i use it for king salmon and deep sea fishing.

maybe a 300 or 200... but a 400 is just plain overkill... unless of course you're going fishing for 200 lb tarpon.

I fish the flats all day with the Calcutta 200gtb. Lightweight paired with a terramar 7ft rod. I spool with mono, but it'll handle braid. Unless I'm targeting tarpon, this reel will handle just about anything in the backbays.

Most everything I use inshore is a Penn 5500 ss or V/S 150. Sometimes, I break out the Abu5500 if the fish are all over the place.

My V/S 150 on a St. Croix 8' spinning is my favorite. 20lb Fireline with 6' florocarbon leader.heart.gif

Light tackle is usually all that is need when fishing on the flats. I use Okuma Inspira 30's, same size as Shimano Stradic 2500. Heavier is usually too much out there. Light line and leaders will get more strikes.

Good fishing!
