Try a Tica GN 300. It's build better then the TW Abu Garcia. The Stock drag is really smooth as well. It only come with a standard 12+lb drag. You can upgrade for very cheap price to smoothies.

Also the new Okuma Clarion 30L Mag casting reel is great too. It has a standard drag of 22lb with Carbon fiber drag. It is a little bigger then a Abu 7000 but it weighs the same and holds about 100yrds more line. Also it is build very well.

This Penn 6000 is a Taiwanese copy of the 7000 ABU. The things I do like about it are the made in USA carbontex drag, the Japanese ss ball bearings, and the IAR and dog and ratchet anti reverses.

It does have a very loud strike alarm.

Now the negatives...

On the box says stainless steel pinion gear, but it looks like brass to me.

As you can see I have replaced the handle with an ABU one, as the original was too small.

You can also see there are no holes for a seat clamp.

I would rather a 4:1 gear ratio. It has a 5.5:1 ratio...a personal thing I guess.

Anyhow, time will tell how it shapes up.

Good of you to share data, S/Slinger. RE: the SSC3's attributes, and especially the ball bearing size for the handle boss. Your posts are most definitive, and go a long way to aid readers in the quest for knowledge.

Good on ya.

I, too, have issues with the black plastic spacer on the lesser-equipped earlier 7's. I've seem them actually COLOURED brass from metal transfer **inside** the boss, plus that wear your photo shows on the outside of the same.

Just a little deeper operating note: unless the user is good at outsourcing, or fabrication, it's probably easier to purchase (from Abu) the 2 bushings this bearing will need to replace the black bit.

Part number 21592, about 7.30 the pair, plus stamps, less any discounts the supplier offers.

The bearings can be had from outsources for about 2.50 a copy for 52100 steel, and a dollar more for stainless. (Abu is asking about 16.75)

Mike's Reel has a schematic for this reel on site. Except for the side plates, handle, all other parts are typical C3 numbers. KD

If you can find one , the best levelwind in that size range is the black BG 7000CS. There is also a black BG 7000 CT if you prefer non levelwind. I think the BG7000CT can be found easier than the CS. The new gold BG series has no allure for me.

Finding it , you are on your own , but IMO the old Black BG 7000 reels were the best of the 7000 size ABU's.

When they announced they would be discontinued , I bought enough BG 7000 and BG 6500 reels so that its unlikely i will ever run out . I also think the same reel in the 6500 size is awesome , rivaled , in that size range , only by the Calcutta 400 which is less castable but feels smaller (more comfortable) in your hand and has a better drag.

I have heard from some hard core Abu Ambassadeur users that the Brass side plate 7000C (with 3 bearings / made in the 1980's) is probably one of the best made of the 7000 range. Anyone familiar with this particular model of 7000 ?

So, what's the skinny on the Abu 7000i - iIs this one of the better 7000's or is it at least decent, or is it krapola?

To BeachBob and Basto:

For BeachBob: The red 7000i and its HS 7000i CT counterpart are probably the best Abu 7000 class reel available at the moment. The 7000/7500 series has been absent from the US market for two reasons. First, when Pure Fishing bought the controlling interest in Abu, they moved much of the machinery. Ostensibly, the tooling for the 7500 was "lost" according to Pure Fishing. The second reason is purely economics for Pure Fishing. They have no interest in niche of specialty fishing. Pure Fishing just wants to sell 50,000 units to WalMart or KMart, etcetera. It takes an act of Congress to get the "international" reels into this country. Pure Fishing only allows entry four times a year and only selected models. If you want the Swedish made good stuff, you will have to find a European or Austrailian dealer and purchase from overseas.

In answer to your original post regarding the red 7000's, read what I wrote about the subject a while back. If you have any further questions of problems, just email me. It is listed in the aforesaid post.

For Bastro: I have never seen the Penn Kimberly 6000. I see you are from Austrailia. We only get the junk here in the US. Do you have any idea where I might find one? If so, please email me at pennvaughan@aol.com. I try to help as many people as possible. I would appreciate your help if at all possible. Thank you.

To All: Merry Christmas

Hi,

I noticed that you build ABU 7000C3 levelwind and 7500 CT reels. I have two of each that I've built from new parts to my own specs.

Do you happen to have any spare axles for the 7500C3 spools or a damaged spool which has a good axle which can be re-used after pressing out of the spool (have done this myself a few times).

Don't bother mate,

Everything I have seen marketed by Jarvis Walker under the "Penn" banner is inferior in some way.

With the Kimberley, the letdown is the inside "chrome" plates. The finish is mock chrome on plastic and it peels away in time making the reel look very ugly.

It's a pitty because otherwise it looks to be a good replica.

Take a look at the Akios line of reels. They are beefed up Abus with all the bells & whistles right out of the box. Ceramic drag & magged stocked.

I believe you would need gears from a 7500, they were offered with a 5.3 gear set. I love the 4.1 gears, think they are the best ratio for surf casting. I just picked up a new(old) Abu with the Winch gears - 3:8 which are even better.
