On the West Coast, it used to be popular to transfer the seat, bars and spool to a jigmaster to narrow it and make a very good 30lb reel.  Newell 332 reels are the same width as a Penn 99.

FYI, the Penn 99 Silver Beach first appeared in catalog #14 and continued until at least 1979 or so.  Catalog #14 dates to around 1949, so it had a pretty good run.
