How long should a spool revolve?

I have a 140 Squidder that I tweaked up with a Newell spool, bars and base. Not on a rod but in my hand the fully loaded (Stealth 50#) spool revolves for 30+ seconds with a good hand spin.

 

I'm thinking that this may be a bit hotter than I need for the 8 n bait fishing I picked it up for so I'm probably going to do the GOS mag route. I'm going to play around with the magnets to try and find the control I like best.

 

My question is, what is the preferred length of free spool spin times (or is there one) for distance casting and also for fishing purposes.

excellent question.. I can't wait to see some answers.. I know that many of the better tournament casters talk about spin times of 20 seconds, using relatively heavy oil.. on the other hand, their are folks like me that have spent way too much time making reels fast (2+ minutes of spin time) so that they have to put 37 mags in it to make it castable...

 

30 seconds with just a hand spin does sound kinda hot.. really interested in the answers here.. i think my avet i just tuned for 8 and bait is probably only around 10-15 seconds but will test it..

The squidder is definitely a long spin if you set it up that way. Mine never got much use, but was a fun toy for those long "tween tides".I put two magnets in cups from Lee Valley ( thanks GOS). Now I can toss a 2 1/2 oz croc 100 yards into a screaming wind and not touch the spool until after the tin has hit the water. The reel still has fairly heavy oil in the bearings. It spins for 5- 8 seconds on a thumb spin with a full spool of 30 lb Ironsilk. Set up this way it is hard to backlash,

With a reel that is full of line and ready to cast (minus the shockleader) a fishing reel will spin for 5 seconds.

 

All of my tournament reels will spin for about 9 seconds.

 

A 900' cast takes only 9 seconds - why spin for longer.

vern, if you are talking about the 2 minute spin.. it's an abu 6500 with a ct (non-levelwind frame).. the bearings are completely flushed of any oil and then a single drop of VERY light oil is added to each bearing.. the plastic gear usually found on the left side of the spool has been replaced with a brass (speed bushing) which is shaped like a bullet and has approximately no friction.. i spin the handle and simultaneusly press the plunger to put it in free spool.. spins just over 2 minutes.. (but it's got a mag conversion for fishing..)

the squidder I setup for 8n bait has 3 fixed mags, heavy oil,30lb Berkley big game, free spin is 6 seconds. setup a squidder jr in an accurate frame conversion, 4 mag adjustable plate, yellow rocket fuel, 17lb suffix tritanium, free spin is between 3 and 13 seconds, mags fully on to fully off position.

Adjustable? How'd you do that? Would it would work on a 140 as well as the Jr?

 

I just reread your post, was this something that came with the Accurate conversion?

Two things will keep a spool spinning a long time, inertia and very little bearing friction. It is the inertia that creates the overruns. To reduce the inertia you have to reduce the total mass of spool or put a break or friction of some sort to control it. One could probably make the Squidder spool spin for a few minutes but it will not make it fishable.

on the charkbait website they show an avet spinning for something like 3 minutes. pretty impressive, but not too practical for your everyday fishing needs. it is cool to watch though.

I tune my fishing reels (penn 525 and avet sx )to spin from about 2 -5 secs . My tournament reels are much much faster , they spin from 5-10 secs .

I use a small daiwa 5M with braid for kingfishing that has no free spin time , ie it will stop dead as soon as the flick it into free spool ,it has double break blocks ,not sure what oil but probably 145w and considerable end tension but this allows me to cast 2-3oz into a strong wind .This same reel with mono has produced my longest practice casts all last summer .

Casting conventionals is all about maintaining control of the spool to prevent backlashing . You are better off over breaking than under breaking . Even slight fluffing can kill distance . Fast spools are good for one thing only , "the line manufacturers ".

Endless freespool is good it you are livelining and want the bait to swim like a champ. For casting, it can be counter-productive if the main reason that it is spinning is because of the spool's inertia.

Correction to my post, the squidder jr spins between 3 and 8 sec, not 13, depending how the mag plate is adjusted...my 6500 mag elites will spin 13 or 14 sec with the mags off, probably why I can't cast em worth a damn, think I should slow them down considerably! Sudsy the adjustable mag setup is home made, didn't come with the accurate frame. Wish I could post some pics, not extremely difficult to build if you saw it but tough to describe. Built the same setup for a 7000C3 and a buddy of mine who fishes conventional alot tried it and said it's the best reel he ever fished, hands down. Gotta look into a digital camera and then how to post pics!

The only time that a looong spin time really helps is when working on spool balance. It helps to determine when you have got the balance just right. I'll tune with just a drop of tourney oil when balancing.... got to admit it's impressive to get those 2-3 min spins.... lol

 

For tourney casting I run mine a little faster than Conn and some of the others. With the mags full off I get 60-75 sec spin times with yellow or red/yellow oil. With mags set to cast I get 12-15 sec spin times. It really boils down to what works for you and what it takes to control the reel with your casting style.
