My buddy Phil went down there to get his permits and he was told that the beach most likely would not open this year. He is the only person that told me this so I hope he's wrong. If the beach is wide enough for my truck to fit, I want to be on it.

No driving at Smith=1/4 of the number of Outer Beach permits sold=BIG loss of revenue to Suffolk County Parks.

The only reason they would ever close it is if it's unpassable due to erosion, and you can convene all the meetings you want. Unless you can get Mother Nature to agree to stop winter storms, it won't matter.

My bet is that while they may close sections of the beach, Burma will be open the whole length wink.gif

Spoke to someone at the booth by phone recently and they said that the beach is "GONE".

I think Shinnecock East is going to be pretttty crowded this year... cwm31.gif

Talked to a couple of the LIBBA guys at the Freeport show this past weekend and asked them about Smith Point. The response was that no decision has been made yet. They did tell me that they were having a replentishment project take place in the Spring and it would be closed until the dredge pipes were off the beach.

Any updates? I always go get my permit in March, but I'm no longer a Suffolk County resident. So before I plunk down 200 bucks icon25.gif I need some solid info.

Yes it is true, I walked the beach yesterday and it was pretty sad.

This year the permits are sold from the main building and they (the state employees selling the green key cards and beach passes) tell you and it is posted, there is a very good possibility that smiths point will be closed all year so you to make an informed decision before you pay.

If the spring storms push the sand back on the beach, then they will open.

That lets me breath easier. That said - it sounds like you'd better know exactly what the tide is doing, where the moon is and what the wind is, before plan to enter. Or leave. wink.gif
