  1. I am headed to Uvita, Costa Rica for two weeks in early May with just myself and my wife (she doesn't fish). I am taking a heavy duty 10" Okuma Nomad travel surf rod and a 6000 series Penn reel with 50lb braid. Grew up fishing for smaller breed fish with fresh bait in Australia in the surf but have limited experience with lures. I would love to catch a Roosterfish but am not really into big game fishing/catch and release - I want to fish for more edible varieties from shore to eat while we are there. Anyone know the specific area at all or got any tips for rig set ups and selection of gear/hooks/lures I should take - good table fish fish to target from shore. Also I can't walk long distances on the beach because I have an artificial leg so if you know of any easy access fishing spots near Uvita that'd be great.
  2. I think it's time, a lot of the other forums on this site have's time for the Main Forum to have one Pictures of fishing, fish, fishing trips, lures, tackle, people fishing, etc, etc, etc - let's see them Couple guidelines - please don't post images that are water marked with promotional logos or URLs - please don't post promotional or commercial/advertising type images - and if you are posting pictures of girls fishing, please make sure they are appropriately attired I'll start I've got miles of pictures...I'm sure lots of you guys do - let's see some! 3. Hi all, My first post on the forum. I am from the UK and I target the European Sea Bass, or just plain Bass as we call them here. A few anglers here target them here from surf beaches with lures. Would anyone here be able to describe the differences between the two rods I mention in the title please? What is the sweet spot for both? How much farther will they 10' cast if at all (I know, lots of variables here)? Action faster on the 9'6? Does one perform different tasks, i.e. is one better with a hard plastic lure (minnow) or metal or heavy soft plastic How's are they both for Buck tailing (something I want to try over here) I want to get as much reach (casting) as I can, but be able to throw soft plastics with jig heads up to 60g, as well as metals into the surf, to reach structure (bars, rips holes etc.). I see a lot of videos that Kil put up are from the boat, are there any where people are using these rods in full surf conditions? I would love to know your thoughts, Any help would be great! All the best Kark
  4. Looking to get more into surf fishing, and was wondering what the SOL community would recommend as a solid pair of waders. I'm looking for a durable pair of waders. I don't mind spending a little bit extra on quality, but don't need top of the line. I was hoping to spend up to $300. Would also like a solid warranty, should anything happen to the waders. Are boot foot more or less durable than stockingfoot? LL bean? Patagonia? Cabelas? Thanks much, James
  5. Hey guys, looking to get my feet wet with some surf fishing next year. Shooting for a nice ultralight multispecies shore rig for the Massachusetts Coast, Deer Island, Nantasket Beach and Castle Island come to mind. Not trying to get any lunkers, just looking to get as many species as possible, maybe take a pan sized guy home on occasion. Planning for most fish to be in the .5-2lb range, 3lbs tops. I already have some 8' ultralight rods that I want to try out in the surf and was wondering if you guys had any good rigs for ultralight surf fishing. I see hi-lo rigs, and most of them are 1oz at a minimum. I'm curious to as how 1/2oz would do for a hi-lo rig. Would it be too light to keep the line stable? Aside from that, I'm looking for saltwater rigs that translate well into the ultralight realm- that being 1/4oz-1/2 oz tops. Any gems that I should know about?
  6. Hey guys, I’m picking up a Siegler SG this evening for surf fishing. Most of the time I’ll be casting between the 2nd and 3rd bar on the texas coast with 4-8 ounces of lead and bait. What are some good rods for slinging bait out that far with this reel? Hoping to have 100 yard throws in good conditions with sone practice Most likely will run 250 yards of 50lb braid and fill the rest with 30 - 50lb mono. Targeted species will be bull reds, black drum, and various sharks. (40-200 lb fish) Any advice and suggestions are welcome!
  7. I know that there are probably a million posts on this site about rods and reels, but I still wanted to ask everyone about them. I wanted to get a Penn Spinfisher V 4500 size and a St Croix Mojo Surf 10 foot Medium Moderate Fast. I'll be mostly fishing Block Island and Long Island during the summer for blues and stripers from the surf (maybe the occasional albie). Was thinking about 20 lb braid. Does anyone have any suggestions? The reason I picked the Spinfisher is because it has a completely enclosed case and I want it to last a while. I was looking at the Battle 2 but it has all those holes and I don't want it to get filled with sand and water. Thanks
  8. Hi, I want to purchase a bib or waders that will work for surf fishing, creek fishing, and to wear on a boat. I already know that I want to get a pair that goes up to my chest. I just can't decide whether to get one with built-in boots. stocking feet, or ones that just cut off at the ankle. I don't really want to have wear waders with built-in boots on a boat. However, I think that if I just slide boots over the bib with no feet, water will come in after the tops of my boots go underwater, and I won't have as much versatility. Do y'all think that I could buy the bibs that just go to the ankles and then buy hip boots and an elastic belt to go around my waders that the hip boots strap onto? I would tuck the bib into the hip boots. Or should I just get a pair with built-in shoes and look kind of dumb on the boat? I don't own a boat so I only fish with my friends who have boats and charters, and I do most of my surf fishing in the summer but occasionally in the fall/spring. I don't want to spend too much; they don't have to be insulated, I just want them to last. Thanks for the help.
  9. Hi, I use 15# PowerPro Super Slick with a 24” 25# fluorocarbon leader. I’ve used quick change swivels when Albie fishing so I can quickly change lures to see what lure type or color is attracting hits. i was told that the Albies won’t hit with a swivel on your line and that I should directly tie the fluorocarbon leader to the lure. Is this true ? Is there another lure attachment method that allows for quick changes when Albie fishing ? Thanks, i look forward to your reply.
  10. I have the opportunity to pick up a Penn Slammer 3 for a pretty good price. I've fished Shimano / VS forever. Maybe you guys can help. What are your thoughts about this reel? How does it fish compared to a Saragosa? Any pros / cons? Pairing this with my Lami 1081L --- Should I buy the 3500, 4500, 5500? I was thinking 4500. Thanks for the help!
  11. Hey everyone! I am new to the forum and look forward in spending hours reading and learning from this awesome site! Anyone interested in a Surf Fishing Meetup to make new friends and share tips in the Santa Cruz/Aptos area? Cheers~

  13. Has anyone been to Panama Surf Fishing? Please share the place and experience. Thanks
  14. I'm thinking about making the plunge into a new Lami and wanted some feedback. I'm looking for a 9' light action rod. I have my eye on the GSB91LS 9'0 1 piece 1/2 -2 oz. Pairing with a VS100. Does anyone have experience with this rod? Thoughts? Other rods I should be looking at? I also thought about a G.Loomis IMX 1084-2S 1/2-3oz. I'm not sure if it's worth the extra $100 though.
  15. Headed to Sea Isle City for family Vaca next week. What are the rules for surf fishing during the day and night on Sea Isle City beach? I have my NJ license set. Figure I will chunk with the family on the beach morning and evening. Any restrictions after dark or otherwise things to know? Also plan to get a 3 day offroad pass for ISBP and fish the inlet with plugs... Thanks All

  17. I'm interested in surf fishing as Open Charter Boats get kind of expensive after a while. I have never been surf fishing and was wondering what are some the basics you need to know about surf fishing. I live just outside NYC and would appreciate any advice or suggestions on Tackle, Gear, Bait and Locations to start fishing in the tri state area. I like to fish for fluke, sea bass, stripers, porgies and just about any edible fish.
  18. I'm thinking about getting the 9 foot 6000 size reel penn battle 2 combo. Is this a good combo to catch stripers? I've heard lots of people complain about the poor rod quality. Also, what size fish can this combo handle?
  19. New to the Portland area and curious to hear some favorites from locals: 1. Tide/time of day? 2. Top water lure? 3. Swim/crank bait? 4. Colors? 5. Any local shops or people making good bucktails? So far I've been fishing the outgoing at dawn at a tidal river with moderately strong current. I've had some success using techniques that have worked for me in NYC/cape cod waters using white bucktails, bone sp minnow, tsunami swim shad and white/blue talkin popper, but I'm wondering if any locals have some experienced advice to offer. Thanks for any info, Ryan
  20. Hey guys I just bought a house in Ronkonkama and I was wondering where to find some good surf fishing spots. I have lived in the huntington area my entire life and its crazy to think I have to start all over with finding new spots if I want to be able to get out after work this season. I'm not looking for any spot burning just some beaches on either north or south shore that have some decent surf to fish from. I have primarily surfed from the north shore my longest rod is an 11' which I'm guessing should still do the job on the south shore. Thanks for your time and good luck out there!
  21. Will be driving down to Ormond Beach from NYC in mid Feb, new area for me, so looking for the usual advice on what to bring from the gear locker. Usually fish the suds from Southampton to East Hampton with artificials and occasionally bait, but need to sort through the kit to narrow what I'm going to pack. It is mostly spin gear, but also 4,5,6 and 8wt fly rods. Wifes' cousin moved down there last October, and is interested in learning how to fish. Read some threads here, most are saying live bait gets the best results so I'll focus there. Since the cousins new place sits right on Ormond Beach, I'll probably be fishing out front on the beach, but that doesn't preclude elsewhere. Presumably the same beach rules apply as far as structure, sloughs etc. Open to suggestions on what to pack etc.
  22. Looking at heading to the Jersey shore Friday morning perhaps Seaside or points south to try walking the beach casting plugs for stripers. I have everything Ill need but need tips from Delmarva guys on any experience where to go and start. Any of AI or Ocean City/ Delaware guys have luck doing this? I see alot of videos of guys walking from block rock pile to rock pile casting into the wash this time of year before weather really turns colder. Ill have my 10' 1-4 oz Nomad Surf rod with my Slammer 5500 spooled with 30lb ultracast. Ive got talkin + superstrike poppers, sp minnows, bucktails, weighted swim shads etc.
  23. Went out to the beach today to fish for striped bass. Didn't get anything but had a good time. Check out the video.
  24. Hello all: Anyone have any info on the fishing conditions off the beaches on Davis Park? East and West ends? Thanks.
