  4. Hi - I need some help with the details before I purchase: looking for help on power, action, and reel size. My specific questions are at the end: I'm looking at a 7' medium power, fast action St. Croix Avid Inshore rod paired with a Shimano Stradic FL in the 5000 size. I am currently using a 9' medium power, moderate fast action Tica TC2 surf rod (1/2 oz to 3oz) which is a little much for smaller lures and definitely not giving any sensitivity when I am using anything under 1oz. I love casting from the surf but there are so many awesome bays around here. Ultimately I want a 7' inshore, a 9' all-around and an 11' rod for jetties/inlets, big surf. I want something that will excel in bay fishing....looking for something that can provide long casts, sensitive enough to feel bottom with bucktail jigs, can handle stripers and blues (maybe fluke and weakfish, and can be a versatile pole I can have some fun with. I had a couple questions: Does this setup make sense for fishing in the bays around Long Island? Does a medium power, fast action pole make sense (think 3/8 to 3/4 oz lures are ok)? Or would you step up to a medium heavy, fast action (1/2 to 1 & 1/4oz). Or something else? Would you go 4000 or 5000 size for the reel? Tempted to go 5000 which gets me a nicer knob and more line (4000 and 5000 are same physical size I believe) Does 7' rod make sense here or should I go 7'6" or 8'? Also if anyone has any suggestion for quality braid that would make sense for this setup. Thanks everyone. I am new around here and basically a hack, vying for the title of 'worst fisherman on Long Island' so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Attached a pic of my latest striper from earlier this week.

  16. Very sad news today of the passing of Dave Colley, perhaps the most sincere, all around nicest gentleman I had the pleasure meeting in the fishing tackle industry. Dave's name was synonymous with the St. Croix brand throughout the country. He was never too busy to share his wealth of knowledge, and did so in a way that never left you doubting for a moment that he cared as much about you as the brand he so brilliantly, and proudly represented. A rare kind of sincerity, from a rare individual. He and I did countless St. Croix videos together at TackleDirect. It was an honor to know him. One of the posts on social media suggested that if you owned any kind of St. Croix rod in the last 20 years or so, Dave had something to do with it. That is for sure. I know I will add him to the short list of names I whisper with both warmth and respect when I am alone on the beach........

Leaning a little towards tsunami because I want to put a new reel on and it'll save a few. Any objections. And any suggestions to a good reel pairing for either rod. In a perfect world of go vs but I don't think it'll happen just yet so something a little more economical. Was considering sheild but not completely sold on it and my price range is by no means restricted to that low either

  21. So... I collected boat rods in the last year because I was into getting on charter boats and headboats... But it's just too much $$$ to keep going. I am trying to sell these to be able to afford a kayak and accessories... To keep the recurring cost down. I have a wife and kids to feed. I know it won't be the same as going on boat trips, but I'm hoping that I will still have plenty of fun. These are priced to sell. For shipping rods, please add $20 (That's how much it usually costs) and for shipping reels, add $10. I will accept Paypal or checks. For checks, they will have to be cleared before I ship the items. I can meet up in Lewes, DE area and from Baltimore, MD to OC, MD areas. FYI, I will be mostly replying in the evenings, after my kids go to bed. (Available) 7' Phenix Black Diamond (PSW700M). Oh, I'm in the market for a kayak (A Hobie with MirageDrive) and accessories. If you have things to trade that fall into "Kayak accessories" category, including a rooftop carrier for a 4-door Altima, I will consider it. If you have other "goodies" to offer up for trade, I'm open to considering it. Not looking to trade with any boat rods, boat reels, surf rods, and surf reels though. Maybe someone will take them all and trade with a used 12' Hobie with MirageDrive? -Update with pics- #1 7' Phenix Black Diamond (PSW700M) #2 7' Seeker Stealth Live Bait (STL 7030C-7) #3 7' Calstar Grafigher (GFGR700L) #4 12' Casting Shakespeare Ugly Stik Big Water (BWC 1100120) #5 10' Spinning Lamiglas Insane Surf (LIS 10 MS) #6 11' Spinning Penn Battalion (BATSF1530S11) #7 9' Casting Stellar Lite Surf (PG1230C90) #8 10' Casting St. Croix Avid Surf (AVSC100MF2) #9 Penn Squall 15 (SQL15) #10 Shimano Curado E (CU300EJ) #11 Daiwa Sealine (SL30SH) #12 Shimano Overhead (TR 200G) #13 Shimano Triton Lever Drag (TLD-15)
  22. Hi, I have some summer travel coming up and was looking for a good all around travel rod. I love the looks of the St. Croix TSRS100M4 and the Okuma Nomad but I am willing to explore all options. Would prefer Paypal/Shipped. I do live in Portsmouth and could meet up as far south as Plum Island/Newburyport MA. I will be traveling 3/19-3/30 so I could only do PayPal/Shipped during that window. Thanks in advance.
  23. Looking for 7'6" St. Croix Tidemaster Travel Casting Rod... Probably not many of these around, but I thought I'd check just in case. I may consider similar inshore travel casting rods, but I'm 80% sure on this one. Thanks. I will be paying via Paypal, shipped to Baltimore, MD. Please price accordingly.
  24. Most of the time when guys wanted to fish for and land big flatheads and blue cats they have to purchase musky and saltwater rods. There has been a surge of quality rods specific for catfish over the past 8 years from smaller companies such as Whisker Seeker, TWC, Rippin Lips, etc... so it makes me happy to see a few brand name rod companies making the effort these past few years to produce quality/high end catfish rods for guys that love pursuing these species with quality gear; St. Croix is one of these companies when it came out with the Mojo Cat in the Summer of 2015. Enter the Mojo Cat. The moment I received the St. Croix Mojo Cat XH rod in the mail today I took it out to the river and slapped an Okuma Komodo SS 471 on it with the intention of finding out how the rod handles. This rod has a composite construction using S-glass and graphite that makes the rod surprisingly light in weight (especially when compared to most other catfish rods built using all glass or composites themselves), this rod model is also rated to cast 32oz of weight and bait (a class best in catfish specific rods), it is rated to 100lb test line, and it has a fast action. The rod was able to cast a single 8oz sinker approximately 100yds (if I had the Penn Fathom 15nlw on the rod, I am sure I could have done better), it handled 16oz of lead for a distance of approximately 75yds, and it was indeed able to cast the max 2lb rating, though that cast only went 30yds (to keep this distance in perspective, I used 2 8oz sinkers and a 16oz soft plastic musky lure in order to simulate weight and live bait), which I consider fairly good. It seems to me that the sweet spot of this rod should fall around 10oz to 12oz, unfortunately, I did not have a 4oz or 6oz sinker on me to test those weights out with while casting. The rod's fast action transfers quite well into the rest of the rod's blank for a smooth and progressive energy transfer during the cast; this should also translate well when fighting larger catfish as they surge and dive when using a drag set in higher ranges. The biggest down side to this rod is the short butt. The rod only has a butt length of 14in. Anyone that has ever tried casting weights of 10oz and up will understand that a longer butt improves casting distance and simply makes it easier to handle larger payloads while casting heavy weights. For a rod that is capable of truly casting 2lbs work of weight, a 14in butt is woefully short. I would like to see St. Croix produce this rod with at least a 16in butt, 18in would be optimal. Ultimately, I would love to see a 2-piece 9ft Mojo Cat with a casting weight rating of 32oz, this would be the ultimate rod for shore bound trophy catfish anglers; it would also make an excellent sturgeon rod or shark rod too if St. Croix did indeed make this rod into a 9ft version. Overall, the first impression was a great first impression and I look forward to putting this rod to the test this up coming Spring. Until then, I am going to put it to use fishing for Musky. I will report back with a long term impression later this coming year.
