  1. Has anyone successfully used cork split grips on a parabolic jigging rod like a blackhole 350/450? Going to be building a 350 as a spinning rod with MN guides and was thinking about cork but worried about cracking.
  2. Looking for a hand wrapper please let me know what you have I am locate in queens ny and can pickup in long island also thanks
  3. Hi everyone, I am new to the rod building game. I have just built my first rod. It was very simple without any crosswraps or anything fancy. It was so enjoyable to build, and I cant wait to build another. The only issue is that I feel like it is a really expensive hobby. The components from the first rod that I built were bought from Mudhole. The rod that I build cost about 100$ all said and done. This is by no means super expensive, but it is also not cheap. I see many people with rows upon rows of fishing rods that they have built themselves. Although it is possible, I simply can not see these people spending 100+ dollars on each fishing rod. I thought that there was possibly some other source where people were buying the components for these fishing rods. Is there one that I do not currently know about? Any help is appreciated. Thanks in advance...
  4. Could anyone please explain the difference in characteristics of a blank made for Singleh hand vs switch rod? I am aware of the difference in application, I wanted to know the difference in blank characteristics such as flex, recovery etc. I am looking for rods for euronymphing (Great lakes )Chinook Salmon!
  5. I have 3, factory new Ron Arra blanks that are ready for a new home. I also have brand new, fuji KR-concept layouts that are matched perfectly for building each. I had planned to build these for myself but haven't gotten to them. (1) XRA 1205-2 for $200 Guide layout: BCMNAT HD top 08(09) - 3.6mm tube, BCKWFG 20, BCLKWFG 12, BCLKWFG 10, and BCLKWFG 8 runners x3 - all for $60 (2) XRA 1383-2 for $275 - each (2) Guide layout(s): BCMNAT HD top 08(7.5) - 3.0mm tube, BCKWFG 25, BCKWFG 16, BCLKWFG 10, and BCLKWFG 8 runners x7 - $80 each layout Would prefer local meetup near Columbia, MD or Lewes, DE. Would be willing to take $750 for everything. thanks for looking
  6. I have a partially built Daiwa Ballistic 35-405B blank for sale. It has an aluminum Alps reel seat installed ($40 reel seat) and shrink wrap grip. Textured grip like X-flock without the X pattern. You can cut it off if you wanted to install X-flock instead. It's setup for spinning. I taped on some guides and did a few test casts otherwise it's like new. Beautiful blank and cast great. I just have one too many rods therefore want to sell this for someone to finish and fish. Reel seat distance is 29.5". It's a 13'3" rod and I've found this to be a good reel seat distance. Rod rated 4-12oz. Includes carrying bag pictured. $300 shipped contiguous USA. $280 pickup Dulles, VA.
  7. Hi all, I am new here and decided to make an account after spending hours reading through all the information you all post up. I am moving to Virginia at the end of the month and recently took up rod building as a hobby. I’ve read that there are some great party boats along the east coast and want to build a rod suitable for the type of fishing done on these. It seems it is mainly Black Sea bass, fluke, tog, etc. and all the tackle I have now is heavier geared towards florida snapper and grouper. I have found a few blanks that appear to be suitable and in the style I am looking for. Black Hole Challenger Banks 731M Black Hole Cape Cod Special Slow Pitch 661HMF I feel the 731M is a sure fire blank but I want to keep it as light as possible as based on my research I plan to match it with an avet sx sized reel. My main concern is the suitability of using a SPJ blank for bottom fishing with bait. Any help is appreciated, thanks!
  8. Hi All I have been doing my best to research a Lamiglas BSG 932 (7’10” Fiberglass salmon Trolling/plugging 10-20lb line rating ) rod blank and what folks built from them. I have one and looking to make an Albie rod but wanted to see if anyone has done something similar. If anyone has any info on the blank please let me know thanks!
  9. Hello! New to rod building here. How do you ensure that your guides are straight on the rod. I have done the line of sight check, but even then they could be slightly off. Any help is much appreciated. TIA!
  10. After a decade of not building rods, I have decided to sell my rod wrapper. It's a Custom Power Wrap, made in the USA. This is the top model with the lathe chuck and drying motor. I also added another 4' track and another dual stand, making the bed 12' long. I also added the tool rest for turning grips. It's in perfect working condition and includes new o'rings for the rollers (though most are fine), 3 complete wheels and some other bearings. I'm missing the top of one of the supports but this has no effect since you never would use the dryer and the wrapper at the same time and the dryer can be used without it anyway. This wrapper and parts are still sold by Anglers Workshop and others. This set up new is about $1400. Selling mine for $600. As a bonus, I will include a 12' drying box that I made. The photo below is one of (3) 4' sections that get screwed together with strips of wood. It has a drying motor and simple chuck installed. The doors are hinged with plexiglass windows. I used the single stands from my wrapper as supports, but you can also make a couple of wood v blocks. I used to have a couple of light bulbs inside to heat the box. Given the size, this is available to pick up only on Long Island (Northport). I get around a little and happy to meet around NYC or at a bridge depending on where you're coming from.
  11. I am looking to build a saltwater medium action, composite (graphite/glass mix), for line 8-17lb, 8’ length, throwing 1-2.5oz. What are your suggestions. I would be using it to catch stripers, bonito, tautog.
  12. Lamiglas TXC 84 1M blank is brand new. Comes with original packaging and all tags, stickers and decals. $75 Thanks
  13. I am wanting to build a surf rod. I am going to put a VSX 150 with 20# on the rod. I‘m casting .75 to 1.5 ounce lures. Rod blank Recommendations?
  14. Thread carriage has added magnets, and the steel bars have been replaced with "Marine grade" SS..... Needless to say the magnets stick noticeably less than they normally would with the standard bars. The Stands are the ones with the yellow O-rings as you can see in the pictures. Dream Reamers (4 sizes) Grape and Charcoal + Black and White combo Shade pack Butt Wrap Alignment tool (I picked up from Palmetto rods/The southern rod builders) Fuji upgraded drying chuck Not shown: Still in package Pro Paste Resin and Hardner in 8oz sizes. The carriage and the stands have never been used with a power wrapper, bought new from Al Engling and Barely have been used. I have this listed all together for $375 shipped (PAYPAL) as parting it out. I do have a few extra things I'll post in the next few days but this is the bulk for 410 shipped (PAYPAL) I'll throw in A CRB adjustable rpm dryer (the fuji chuck does not fit it or needs modifying) I moved back to South Jersey area due to unforeseen circumstances (My ex is a hoe), I am in Pitman NJ if anyone is interested in local pickup I'll drop $20 off the price. I'm trying to move this FAST! I
  15. I know this request is geared to a small population on this forum but here it is. I am looking for someone who can give me two caliper measurements from a St Croix Legend LSS106MM2. This is the 10’6” Legend rated at 3/4 oz to 4 oz lure weight. The two measurements I need are both made on the butt section; 1) At the top of the butt section and 2) at The point where the top section ends when the rod is completely put together and tight. Please see the attached photos. I need a precise caliper measurement so that will probably limit the size of the group of people who can help me. Thank you in advance :))
  16. Hi All, I'm new to this forum and in need of some help. I've built a few light tackle saltwater rods and a couple of fly rods years ago, but I'm new to surf rod building, and I'm about to start a 9' GSB 1M. From my research the Fuji RV is the way to go. I'm hard pressed to find any solid resources specifically for surf rods. All the materials I've found are not designed for surf rods. (i.e Anglers Resources KR GPS). I have been using Dale Clemens book as a guide but the book is outdated on guide tech. I'm not clear on three things for surf rods: 1) Distance from spool tip to the first stripper/butt guide: some factory rods range from 30-36" is this all trial and error? 2) Ring size: for KR do I go 20 or 25 for surf rods? The rod will be paired with a Van Staal VR 125/150 and 30 # braid. It seems that 25 is the best bet. 3) Choke guides after the RV butt? Do you go with KWs and use KTs as runners? Are single foots runners acceptable? Most factory rods I see go with double foot KWs for the entire rod including the runners. Is it all preference? Thanks for your help!
  17. I'm looking for a power wrapper in good working condition. Thanks in advance.
  18. I haven't wrapped a rod since Sandy...now my 16 year old nephew wants to build a couple rods. So I'm going to do some material gathering and I'm wondering - has anything noteworthy changed since 2013 in rod building? Better epoxy? Threads? Cork tape? Grips? Reel seats? Guides? We're gonna wrap a couple conventional boat rods first. About the fanciest thing we will do on the first couple rods is MAYBE use TWO different colors on the guides...wanna keep it simple, just don't wanna miss out on any new technology TimS
  19. So I'm building a new rod specifically for albies throwing mostly 1oz tins. The blank is a St Croix Salmon/Steelhead SC3 9.5' (Fast action • H power • Lure wt - 1/2 - 2oz). The reel will be a Penn Clash 4000 with 20lb braid Thinking of 2 possible setups 1) 20H, 10H, 6M and followed by 2 x KB6s and then KT6s to the tip. 2) 25H, 12H, 7M and followed by 2 x KB6s and then KT6s to the tip. Any thoughts / recommendations would be most welcome. Thanks everyone!!

  23. Made this for my brother who lives in Colorado. He wanted a 9' 3 wt and Mudhole had the OEM 9' 3 wt blanks on sale. The reel seat is a stock type up locking that I happen to have a few of and they weight less than an ounce. The guides are Fuji KW 10 Alconite with SS frame and SS Black painted framed (BLAG) Alconite 7mm transition guide and the rest 5.5mm running guides and 6mm tip top, all Alconite ceramic rings. The grip is a half wells and the thread is Fishawk black and Pac Bay metallic Red.
  24. Hello everyone, Last year a bought a Star Rod Stellar SG90IS. Around that time one of the swanky exclusive beach clubs in my area decided to push a bunch of sand right up to the adjacent groin that separates their beach and the public beach, this effectively created covered crevices (booby traps) between the rocks. So while i was walking on the sand next to the rocks my foot plunged through the sand into one of these covered crevices resulting in a nasty leg scrap, a dislocated pinky and worst of all I broke the top piece of my brand new rod. I tried contacting Star Rods to see if i could purchase a replacement top piece since the butt piece is perfectly fine. Star Rods was gracious enough to ignore my communications, awesome customer service! Since I have a practically brand new butt section I wanted to try and build a new top piece on my own. I am new to rod building so I thought this project would be the perfect way for me to get started. Additionally I think it will be fun to experiment with rod pieces to use for different applications. I wanted to see if anyone could offer some advice about how I should go about picking a blank to make the top piece from. I understand that the rod relatively inexpensive and it might make more sense financially to just replace the entire rod but it would really bother me to just throw away the butt section. Thanks in advance for any advice!
