  1. Has anyone had a chance to check out the Tsunami Forged 8? It looks like it has some decent specs and was wondering if anyone on here has any experience fishing the bigger sizes which I believe are the 10 & 12? The price on the reel also seems to be very reasonable, I believe it's around $170 which is less then other reels in it's class just based on its specs.
  2. I'm a complete newbie. So far I have only been using trout gear I had on hand. I can't jump in at the $300+ rig level and so I am shopping around for modest setups. Durability and all that is a top concern for me since I am new and will probably abuse things more than an experienced angler would. My question is this... do you really think that a $200 reel lasts 4 times longer than a $50 reel, or whatever other math and multipliers you can think of? Why not get $30-$50 reels and consider them kind of disposable?
  3. Hello! I'm wondering if anyone could suggest some intermediate saltwater spinning reels to be paired up with my Ugly Stik elite spinning rod, its a 7 ft, medium power, 2 piece. The fish i'll mainly be targeting are Striped bass, Bluefish and Fluke. Reel sizes I'm looking for are 3000-4500 but if you have a size suggestion go ahead and tell me about it! I'm looking to spend 100$ or less, but if I have to i'll spend more in the name of fishing! ANY suggestions are greatly appreciated!!!
  4. Reel repair gurus I need your help. So just before heading out to fish this evening, I checked my Calcutta 300 D, all was well, functioned as it should have. Fast forward 25 minutes and on the first cast the spool won't turn. The thumb bar clicks up when the handle is turned, but the gear isn't engaging the spool. Got home and gave it a quick look, but can't see anything obvious that would cause the issue. This is the second time it's happened in less than a year, sent it out to Shimano for repairs last time. Before I box it up and drop the $50 for service, is there anything that I might be able to do here to get me back in business? Thanks.
  5. I have the opportunity to pick up a Penn Slammer 3 for a pretty good price. I've fished Shimano / VS forever. Maybe you guys can help. What are your thoughts about this reel? How does it fish compared to a Saragosa? Any pros / cons? Pairing this with my Lami 1081L --- Should I buy the 3500, 4500, 5500? I was thinking 4500. Thanks for the help!
  6. I have an old penn 104 reel and rod that I dug up from my teen years. I broke it down and gave her some TLC and is working great again so i threw on some left over 30 lb power pro and im going to make it the loaner rod for friends who come out with me. Most likely people who don't fish often/ ever and don't have their own gear. My question is, should I use the PP as backing and add mono on top? or just splice in more PP? I was thinking 15 lb mono. I got roughly 100 yards PP on and it should fit another 100 or so yards 15# mono. Or should i go up/ down with the mono? I'll be using a 50 lb fluro leader. I know PP benefit is its thinner compared to mono of same strength ( 1/4 diameter or something if i remember correctly) so with backing i get more line cap as long as i dropped. Primarily fishing for bass and blues inshore, both boats and from rocks around Boston/ Narraganset bay but im starting to get into albie this season with my inshore spinning setup (stradic 5k on 7' 3/8-2 oz), so i'd some flexibility. Primarily throw plugs/ softbaits. If im trolling ill use my convention setups so not for this thread. Thanks all
  7. Looking to get my kids into fishing and I’m looking for 3 reels. Penn 4-5 hundred series shimano baitrunner 3500b-4500b im south of Boston. As for rods, I’ll pair them up with ugly sticks for the abuse.
  8. Does anyone here own an Einarsson and fish it in the salt? Thanks.
  9. Hi, I know a lot of folks use line weighted over what their rod is rated, and I'd like to try putting 9 on a cheap 8 weight rod to see if it improves cast. But what about the reel? I have a reddiington behemoth 7/8. What is the impact on putting a heavier weight on the reel? Thanks.
  10. Im just wondering if the stradic sw is going to be sold in the U.S. I saw scoobydoos video on it and you can get them on eBay but i just want to know the status on them and if its worth the hassle of getting one

  16. Does anyone know of any sealed fishing reals besides the van staal that would be affordable for surfcasting?
  17. Testing the waters here, looking for the mate to the one I have..... moving the reel from surf rod to boat rod sucks... :-)
  18. Hey guys, this cold snap got me thinking about how and what to store inside during the winter. I moved into a place with a garage last year so everything has been stored out there... I have significantly increased my gear this year and had always stored stuff inside before. I have close to zero room inside unfortunately so I only want to bring in the necessary stuff. What is recommended to not keep in an unheated garage? Are reels affected? Do rods become brittle? What about plastic swimmers and gulp baits? I live in MD so we are not talking crazy sub zero negative temps. Much obliged.
  19. Hi all. Looking to up my game and get 2 new casting setups that can throw at least 8oz (maybe up to 10) for Assateague. Currently using 11ft 2-6oz Penn Battalion setups but had trouble holding bottom last time. I cant always pick best weather when I get a chance off to head down from Baltimore. Looking to spend medium to decent money... maybe 600 total but dont hold back on more $ recommendations. Prefer options readily available somewhere and on short notice (maybe even buy by Friday or Sat. Rods- any recommendations on 11, 12, or 13fters? Glass or graphite? Need to be 2 piece cus I roll in a wrangler tj. Reels- im new to conventional casting so what reel is best? Considering 2 Abu Blue Yonder 7500s cus the mag cast control. Anything cheeper that still has mag control and good? I have heard Mono is prob best for conventional. 20 or 25lb? Colors like hi-vis Green KastKing ok? I usually use a 50lb big game shock leader for my 6oz setups... do I need to go to 80 or 100lb for throwing 8 or 10ozs? Lastly I am also planning on getting 4 long beach spikes... the ones that hold reel at chest level. Any instructions for self making or a guy that makes and sells them? Cheers Guys!
  20. I got a rod from a auction and thought it was about time I tried using it. I would like to spend under $100 bucks on A decent conventional reel to pair with a st croix mojo surf rod msc110 mhf2.(3 to 8 oz) I'm planning on using the reel to chunk bunker in the south shore surf of L.I , to catch me some brolic stripers. The reel should be able to hold at least 250 yards of 50 lbs test braided line. Thanks guys
  21. I have a daiwa Catalina 100 with a power handle. I am looking for a Light bait casting rod with a trigger grip and full rear grip. I don't like th trevala as it is way too heavy for what I'm doing. Bucktails from 1-4 ounces and popcorn rigs with 6-7
  22. So I've been wanting to get into Saltwater fishing for a while now, and I've finally decided go for it. I live in Massachusetts so I'll be fishing from jetties, piers, and from shore. Also I'll be fishing around the Boston area and down near Cape Cod. The fish I'll be targeting will primarily be Striped Bass, Blue Fish, and Black Sea Bass. Currently I'm eyeing the 7,6 MH St. Croix Tidemaster Inshore Spinning Rod paired with a PENN Spinfisher V Spinning Reel. My budget is $350-$400 for both the rod and reel. So what's a good rod/reel for my criteria? Also what rod length should I go for I was thinking of going for 7,6 but having it fit in the car is a concern. Lastly what line should I get? I'm currently thinking of getting 20 pound braid but I'm worried it won't be enough for striper and blue fish.
  23. I'm looking for a decent price on a new or excellent condition Penn Battle or Penn Conflict in sizes 4000, 5000, and/or 6000. Let me know what you have in what condition and what you'd want for them. Looking to buy as soon as possible Thank you! -Tim
  24. I have 4 antique reels and I don't know what to do with them. Anyone have any suggestions? I have: 1. Ocean City "90" Automatic fly reel 2. Johnson Citation Model 110B closed reel 3. Mitchell Model 300A open face reel 4. Bache Brown Spinster (aluminum and black) reel Bryan A.
  25. Hi. I'm new to surf fishing. I plan on fishing at Plum Island MA and maybe occasionally CCC. How are the Fierce reels? I'm planning on buying an 11' tsunami trophy rated 4-6 oz. I'd prefer a cheaper reel as I don't plan on fishing every day or even week. Will the Fierce and/or the Fierce II reels last at least a season? Also, If anyone can suggest a surf setup for around $150-$175, that would be nice. Lower the better for me. Thanks!
