  1. After a 25-year hiatus from conventional surf casting with a Penn 500 Jigmaster and a calloused spooling thumb, I hit the Calif. beaches in June, targeting leopard sharks and bat rays with a whole squid on a 6/0 circle, or perch and croakers with squid strips on a #4. The Fathom 15 is a fantastic advance in technology from my '70s era Jigmaster, but I'm only getting about 60 to 75-yard casts with a combo of a 4 oz pyramid sinker, 17 lb mono on the Fathom 15, and an 11-foot Okuma Solaris rod. Only one pair of the three brake pairs is engaged and I've never de-greased the bearings (never suffered one bird's nest so far though). I'm using my best rendition of a Hatteras cast and the rod seems to be loading nicely. Even though I caught a 25 lb bay ray and many meaty croakers with the bait 60-75 yards out, I could see other gamefish being pursued by dolphins/seals at the 100 to 125 yard range, and I'd like to throw big 3 - 5 oz spoons or baits out that far next time. Any good videos on cleaning out the Fathom and putting super whiz-bang oil in it? I'm also open to getting another larger reel like the Akios 757 CT or Blue Yonder 7000 if it means potentially doubling my distance. The heaviest fish I'm likely to encounter are medium rays or shovel-noses, big leopards, yellowtail (occasional boat charters), and drums. I'd appreciate any advice from the forum.
