I've never been much of an eel fisherman, whether live, rigged, etc. Going to get into it more this year, and I'm wondering how you fellas approach eeling on an open sand beach? Would you say its as effective as in rocky areas? I know it all depends on the bite and what the fish want but any input would be appreciated. Thanks!

This month Ill be targeting stripers at a location where there is a bottleneck of action. During the nighttime outgoing tide, bait fish are carried to this bottleneck and the stripers feast. You can see the flash of stripers slicing through this bait ball. But considering the heavy action I wasnt happy with how few we caught last time I fished the location. I was using live eels, hooking the eels through the upper jaw and livelining them. Im wondering if there is a better way. Should I try a sinker rig instead? I was thinking about tying a weight at the end of the line and tying the hook a couple feet above so the eel cant dive for cover and is flailing in the middle of the water column. Any suggestions?

What’s required for trapping eels for your own bait? Anyone do this as opposed to buying live eels during the season?

I have been fishing with live eels and wondering if anyone can help me out. Lately, the eels are not staying alive over night. I have been storing them in a bait bucket tied off my boat at marina. The bait bucket was an old 5 gallon size bucket which i drilled holes in everywhere, so water could flow through. I believe the water temp is around 70 degrees, but may be getting warmer and the water has been a bit tainted lately. Earlier in the summer i had no problem keeping them alive for days, even a week. I could just store what i did not use in bucket and they were ready to go net rip. My last 2 trips they did not survive. I took them to the boat yesterday morning and showed up this morning and all were dead. I was wondering how other people store their eels they do not use .....and if anyone uses a bait bucket, what I may be doing incorrectly? Thanks...

To all: Just curious. Do any of you guys use the "New York" style rigged eel here in NJ? This is nothing more than a dead eel with two siwash hooks lashed to the body of the eel. I would like to here from some of you who do fish riggies this way. It seems that in Ct, RI and MASS. this is the convention. Some time ago I read a thread on this. This style of rigged eel was described by Tim S as "Kinda like a hamburger without the bun, good but not the best." Even though this may be an unconventional method for NJ I am sure there are some who wouldn't do it any other way. The reason I am starting this thread is that I am intrigued by regional differences in surfcasting. For example my good friend Dave lives in Connecticut. I sent him a school bus bomber, he had never seen them in use by anyone. Most Jersey bass fisherman would never leave home without one! Did this plug work in Ct? You bet it did.
