Scotch & Stripers posted a topic in Main ForumI was looking at a large selection of Shimano Waxwing lures at a North Shore (Boston) tackle shop the other day. I asked the person working there if he had any feedback on them but he said he was new and had not fished them before. The lures are on the expensive side but they do seem to be something innovative. Has anyone tried these on stripers? Local insights would be great. Surf or boat? Which size and colors are preferred (there are a lot of them)?

Hi, maybe you Left Coasters can help me. I have a 300EJ as well as a Lexa 300. Since I'm looking to get into more surf fishing...instead of springing for a heavier spinning setup to toss 1 - 2.5 oz lures, I'm thinking about getting a longer baitcasting rod that I can match with one of my 300 sized low profile reels. I got a chance to play around with a 7' Terez Waxwing in the store, but they didn't have any 8 footers. The 7' M and MH seem to fit the bill...but would like a slightly longer rod. Anyone with experience casting these rods, either the 7 or 8', I'd appreciate your thoughts. I know there's quite a few of you guys who use baitcasters from shore for California halibut, tossing hard jerk baits and swimbaits. This is similar to the kind of light surf fishing I'll be doing in NJ: 1-2 oz jigs and gulp/swimbait trailers, the occasional CIF flashminnow or diamond jig. But mainly bouncing bottom with jigheads tipped with soft plastics. I prefer something light enough that I can palm the reel and work the jigs with my wrist. Any other rods that you think I should look into?
