  1. Hi everyone im pretty new to the forum, i joined because i wanted some more info on my vr50. I live in europe austria to be exact and sending in reels for service isnt something i would do i always serviced reels myself which isnt a problem at all im a mechanical and electrical technitian and i know quite a bit about stuff like that i service all my reels mostly high end shimanos like twinpowers and a vanquish, those are not hard to service yourself and Van Staals are even easier. The only problem is that there dont seem to be any self service kits and i wanted to ask if someone knows the seal and bearing dimentions, i could check everything myself once i need it but that means that i have to wait to get all the right bearings and seals before i can put it back together and im really trying not to do that. The other thing is grease, i know van staals use rheolube, type 797, 362HB and maybe NC346 for some reels ? I think the lighter one is used for the VR50 gears and the thicker really sticky type for parts like the handle thread, which would not be a problem if the grease at the handle thread is not the original one, atleast as long as it doesnt damage the seals. I have tried a bunch of different grease like most shimano grease types, daiwa grease and quantum hot sauce but i have found that the XR1 penn grease is by far the best, you have to use only a tiny bit on really small reels otherwise there is a bit too much resistance but other than that its perfect for mid sized or bigger reels. The XR1 penn grease could hurt seals a bit in the long run but that should not be a problem if i can get seals for it, but again for that i need to know the seal dimentions. I would not be able to buy the original rheolube since its already way too overpriced as is and with shipping and customs it would be like 100$ or more and thats not something im going to do. The only seals i would need to change are the main shaft seal, line roller unit seals and the handle shaft seal, i already had some orings that fit the housing covers (1x40mm oring), and i probably have the other orings needed for the VR50 they are also the same material as the original orings. I would really apreciate it if someone could help me out with the seal dimentions
  2. I had big plans this year to do more surf/jetty fishing rather than party boats, but things have come up and my VRs are just sitting in my closet. I don't think I will have much time to fish from shore in the foreseeable future, so I'm letting these go. I will most likely regret it, but that's how it usually goes. The reel and spools are in excellent condition. I took it out once. I do not have the stock handle. I destroyed it while installing the power handle. I'm including everything that was included in the original box (Minus the stock handle) VR50 spool has 20 lb Sufix 832 VR75 spool has 30 lb Sufix 832 I bought the VR75 and spare VR50 spool (Yes, they are interchangeable) I'm accepting Paypal and letting it go for $500 shipped.
  3. I’ve used it maybe 15-20 times for a season. It’s been sitting unused for over a year now. Never dunked I used it to mooch for salmon and jigging rockfish from the boat. Never seen the sand. I’m the original owner and have the box and bag. Shipping is a must I’m west coast. Thanks for your consideration. $425 shipped. I’d consider a smoother high end spinner in trade like a Shimano or Daiwa, 4K and above in size.
  4. I have a question about braided line on VR and VSX reels. Is there any reason why you would not recommend deviating from the published line recommendations? For example, will 15# braid cast better than 20# on a VR50 with marginally less strength? On the other end of the spectrum, will the small cup of the VSX150 be a problem for 40# or 50# braid when throwing artificials for snook or tarpon. I normally wouldn't care about experimenting, but braid is expensive and there's a ton of smart anglers who can answer my question and save me a few bucks. I just moved to FL so there is a lot of different fishing going on, not just surfcasting (who knew).
  5. Looking to pick up a VR50, preferably silver. Let me know what you have. Thanks!
  6. Reel is in good condition! Been one of my work horses for the past year, never had a problem with it. Reel is spooled with 20lb powerpro super slick. 400$ shipped right to your door.
  7. I have a vr50 that was only used a couple of times, spooled with fresh 40lb PP. I'm looking to get 425 shipped and insured with paypal. Located in RI if you would like to meet up.
  8. I like to swim with light tackle during the summer or when I'm down in Florida. The Van Staal VR50 seems like the perfect reel, but is it too good to be true? I would rather save the weight if I could by buying a VR50 instead of a VSX150. I know people complained about the VR line for a long time, and in general, they seem to have held up. If I want a light reel I don't need to worry about swimming with, is there really only one choice? Would cycle between St. Croix Mojo Inshore 7MH and 9' Grumpy's Sandstorm (Jersey for life).
  9. 10. Up for sale is a mint VR50. I got a black one as a gift and I don’t need two VR50’s. used a few times. Some minor scratches but barely visible. Comes with everything you see on the picture. 11. Getting a bit more serious with surf fishing. Looking to save a bit from retail. Van Staal VR 50 in NEW or 9/10 condition. Thank you
  12. Here is the “Reel Edition” of my “Spring Cleaning” rod thread. Look here if you’re interested in some rods: **Prices listed are TYD and includes shipping and PayPal fees. Will knock a little bit off if picked up locally. I will also reduce price slightly for rod and reel combos, but will not ship combos.** **Pictures to follow** Van Staal VR50 Silver - $385 - Bought new last March, spooled w/ blue Power Pro Super Slick V2. This reel had an issue out of the box; the drag knob would tighten on its own when line was being pulled. Serviced by Fishermen’s Headquarters and it has been a non-issue since. Used a handful of times on the sod banks and came on a few boat rides for tog jigging. Never dunked, always rinsed after use. I really just prefer the refinement of my other spinners and don’t think I need the ruggedness of a Van Staal for my type of fishing. Slight blemishes on the bottom of the reel stem from sitting in the rod holder. Shimano Stradic FK 5000 - $140 - Used, in great condition. Upgraded to a couple Stradic FLs. I prefer 3000-sized reels on most of my set-ups so this one gets no love. Light rash on the rotor and bail. (2) Shimano Stradic Ci4 3000 FB + (1) Spare 3000 Spool - $325 - No boxes. Both are in good mechanical condition with normal signs of use cosmetically. Spare spool is in excellent condition, I don’t recall the brand or lb test braid I have it spooled with. Would prefer to sell as a bundle. Shimano Curado DC 151 HG - $170 - Good used condition, light rash. Actually picked this one up in a trade on another forum a few weeks ago. Probably won’t use it as the Dobyns rod I was going to pair it with is also for sale in my other thread linked above.
  13. Van Staal VR 50 Silver. Like new in box complete. Not a mark on it that I can see. Test cast only, no fish. Loaded with 20# PP SS V2. $425 shipped with payment via PayPal.
  14. I bought this new/unused Van Staal VR50 back in December here on SOL for $385. It’s a very nice reel, I just realize that I will fish my Shimano’s & Daiwa’s way more. So I am selling it and just want to recoup/net the $385 I paid for the Reel (so the $405 sale price less the fees & shipping I will pay comes out to about $385). The Reel comes with the Van Staal Box, Tool, and paperwork. It came spooled with Berkley X9 20lb braid, which I haven’t taken off. $405.00 shipped … PayPal.
  15. Selling VR50 used twice in like new condition with nothing wrong with it. I decided that I want to stick with bail less for the surf.
