  4. I like to do light shoreline whipping "spincasting" using tough bubbles with water, Hammer Bombs, or lead eggs. I'm looking at the new Okuma salt water light rods. Specifically the 10ft 2pc Med 10-20lb 3/4-3oz at 258g. They're inexpensive and the stats fall within my preferred range of length vs casting weights used. At night i use 3/4oz lead eggs with luminescent soft plastic grubs. Daytime it's mostly the same using 1-11/2oz tough bubbles w/water to Hammer Bombs with soft grubs to spoons like Kastmasters & Krocodiles. Would like to hear any feedbacks from others using the 10 footers (ML, M, MH) before i get one. Targeting reef species up to 10lb (Bonefish, Trevally, Ladyfish, Cuda).

  6. Hi everybody! I bought an okuma 8k surf over this off season. I currently have it loaded with a whole lot of 20lb mono. I have seen people taking about using alot of 65lb braid and then a topshot of heavy mono. Supposedly it is strong enough to bring in medium sized sharks and heavy rays. Does anyone else agree with that? It's not a metal body reel but it is strong. I just wanna know if it would hold up to some abuse.

  15. Hi. Opinions needed. I just received an Okuma Cedros CSX 11' surf rod from Amazon Warehouse. It was marked as Used - Like New condition. It arrived in a cardboard tube/box and the 2 pieces were loose in there. I examined the blanks and guides and at first I only saw some surface scratches on the epoxy loaded guide foots on one guide. But then I saw that the blue paint was chipped at 2 places on the lower end of the top section (between connection and second guide). Seems like the carbon underneath the paint is OK but I don't know I should keep it. Since I bought from Amazon Warehouse, there is no replacement option. It's either keep it or return it. They offered 10$ promo gift card for a future buy and if I keep it a 20% refund on the price I paid. After the 20%, the price of this rod would be 108$ CAD (around 81$ USD). What do you guys think? Worth keeping it? Apply Epoxy on the chipped areas and give it a go? Not sure if it's still backed by Okuma's Limited Lifetime warranty since I bought if of Amazon Warehouse... Thanks
  16. Local pickup in southeastern CT. Will post pics if anyone is interested. St Croix Legend Surf custom built on 9’ ¾-4 blank with kw guides. Good condition, couple scuffs here and there. Relatively long butt (27” to reel stem). Handles it’s entire weight range, a blast to fish with a vs150 and still has enough power for big fish. Built by "ged" on here: https://www.stripersonline.com/surftalk/topic/578593-wts-custom-9-legend-34-4oz-325/ $200 Okuma SBX swimbait 7’11” XH 2-10oz casting rod Lightly used, excellent condition. Technically a freshwater swimbait rod but would work great for throwing bigger plugs to bass or dropping jigs, etc. I'd say the rating is a little generous, I didn't cast anything over 6oz. $120 St Croix Avid Musky AM69HF 6’9” 1-5oz casting rod Very stout rod, could handle dropping lead well over 5oz. Some weathering to the cork but otherwise in great shape. $100 St Croix Legend Tournament Bass TBC79HMF casting rod (“flipping”) rated ½-2 but can cast much heavier weights (rating is for suggested flipping weights). Used it for swimbaits up to ~4oz. Excellent condition $200 Dobyns Champion 764C heavy fast ¼-1.5oz casting rod Great shape, some wear and discoloration on cork. $140 St Croix Premier PC66MF 6’6” ¼-3/4oz casting rod Some discoloration on the cork but otherwise great shape. Perfect for fluke jigging with light jigs. $60 St Croix Avid AS50ULF 5’ 1/32-3/16oz ultralight spinning rod Rod is in great condition, just some discoloration on the cork $80

  20. This tiny piece , this micro shim, put in the wrong place in the factory, made me search for the cause of rumble and ticking in the reel nr. 3 ( as I marked it ) for weeks. And as I did it with problematic one I also did something with other two, as a colaeral damage, because they were fine. About 20 times I have assembled and reassembled these three othervise magnificent products, Okuma Surf 8K . Here is the picture storie to explain; This is the bushing on which the shim goes micro shim to be precise This is the spot where that shim is needed and is shown on the scheme However, on this particular reel ( nr.3 ) it was on this tiny shafts bushing, and not on the worm shaft. I have noticed that it lacks a shim on the worm shaft and has a shim on the driven gear shaft, but assumed that it is so because it needed that sort of correction, and continued searching for the cause in changing all imaginable places and positions possible. I have even tried to put that shim where it is on the scheme and where it was on the other two reels, but in the proces I have also turned idle gear wrong side in, which will be explained later on. It was done in such way with idle gear because I was searching for the cause.. and as it goes misscounted the steps and count of abreviations so the proper resolution was all but impossible. This is that idle gear in the proper side in position ( the right side turned inwards has 3 dimples in it and ..a perfect round place for the bushing, which it doesn`t need, ( it needs tip of the worm shaft to go first and bushing to "wait" for it on the other side ) but it looks perfect for the clueless fixer upper to conclude the wrong thing and turn it the other way round, which I did, at one point with all 3 of them ), This is the wrong side to be turned inwards, it has 4 dimples and slightly wider groove thru the midle section https://photos.app.goo.gl/KQm4hpJ9iqwLoFfG8 https://photos.app.goo.gl/nyJZBEgGveGdvKox5 https://photos.app.goo.gl/kj1X4iUW5oYxQtxq9 https://photos.app.goo.gl/sVYZuUy8ezxyEy3w9 Avast, with some help from the forces of the universe and continuous repeating of the same thing, for which it is said that defines something, but not smart; "The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting different results." I have found the solution at the day 13-th of october, in the year 2018-th Thx, and watch out, it`s not only "made in china" that we have to be careful abut..
  21. Okuma Nomad 9' Spinning rod - 4 piece travel rod and case. Rod is in excellent condition, rod has served its purpose, and is just collecting dust. Time to let it go, and let someone else get some use out of it. Asking $125 shipped to lower 48 states. ------- SOLD ------- Korkers lace up- XL Brand new, never used, have been sitting in storage. original box is gone, but I will package them up nicely. I special ordered these from Korkers years ago, with the long spikes, these work very well, especially where there is a lot of sea/bubble weed. These are much lighter than the more bulkier wrap around with the strap & buckle. Asking $60 shipped to lower 48 states. Not looking for any trades, Paypal preferred.
  22. Two used large low profiles for sale. First is an Okuma Komodo SS 364. Excellent condition, used primarily in freshwater with swimbaits. Only a couple minor marks on it. Comes with original box and both handles (paddle and power). Asking $130 shipped. Second is an Abu Garcia Revo TORO Nacl 60 5.4:1. Don't have the box/paperwork and only have the power handle. Reel is in great shape mechanically but has some boat rash on the body. Very powerful reel, just a little wider than I'd like. Tough to find. Line not included. Asking $160 shipped.
  23. OK, another post giving a preview of another "new" reel introduced at ICAST 2016 and just coming into stock now at TD etc. This is the Okuma Komodo SS a "400" sized LP baitcaster that uses an all stainless steel gear train and makes ~30 lbs of drag. I put "new" in parenthesis because this is simply a larger version of the Komodo 364P that has been out for several years and is now considered a proven design. Okuma has updated the cosmetics and went to all stainless for an even tougher version that epitomizes the "small reel for big fish" concept. The reel weighs only about 16 oz but has the capacity (~250 of 65 lb) of a Spherogosa 8k but those weigh 22 oz...its not sealed of course, but it has massive cranking power for it's size. These reels are real powerhouses for their size and weight. Got about ~250 yards of PP 65 lb on there: Next to a Revo Toro Rocket (more about that later). It looks much bigger but its not. They are both about the same height. The Komodo SS is just a little wider for more capacity: Matte grey with black and silver: Only ~16 oz with a 120mm power handle. This is the 471P or the 400 size in 7:1... Still has a clicker for live baiting or slow trolling: One of the improvements over the older version is a much simpler method of adjusting the Centrifugal Brakes: Another cosmetic shot: The Thumb Button opening into the body is well protected from splashes entering the reel: Titanium Nitride coating for the line guide. That's a little wax left from spooling tightly with power pro: Raceway for the brakes inside the graphite left side cover: Inside the gear box pure stainless steel beef: Drag is well greased: Main gear is MASSIVE at ~54mm and a spool line height of only about 40mm. A Tranx (22 oz and a much larger reel) has a main gear (brass) that is only 50 mm with a much larger spool in proportion. The Komodo 471P SS should be the new king of cranking power and power transmission for it's speed (7:1 ~38" IPT). Ok, so why are these reels so exciting to me? Cranking power to weight. Try to imagine a Penn Senator with the Main Gear 25% larger than the spool....or a spinning reel with a Main Gear 25% wider than the rotor width...you can't because the reality is that other reel geometries produce Gears that are working against spools/rotors that have much wider radii...a huge mechanical disadvantage. This is why every Bass Pro uses a conventional reel for crank baits...if you are casting and retrieving something with resistance this is the way to go. Think SP Minnows, Mag Darters and such fished fast...that is where these reels are a joy. Oh, and also with a big fish on. Lets take a look under that bracket retaining the Main Shaft as it can be a problem area: Its well greased with a synthetic waterproof grease to protect that bearing in it's receptacle which is notorious in all of the LP reels for saltwater collection. Someday it would be nice to actually seal this area...: Ok, so all of this is first impressions. I fished a Komodo 364p for over 2 years without a hiccup, but we will have to see if anything in the production of these larger models comes up....so far, very impressed. If you haven't fished one of these you are missing one of the finest reels Okuma makes and not at all painful on the pocket. Top notch top to bottom and the Komodo SS can probably make an argument for "Best in Class for the Money" in this hyper-competitive segment of "Large Low Profile" reels albeit by a small margin over it's competitors. All of these reels are just that good, imho.
  24. These have all been in my basement for too long. All are in working order except the 3500b. The liveliner drag isn't working. Asking $25 each p/u only. Located in Matawan nj 07747. Daiwa podcaster 100H Okuma avenger av65 Okuma epixor ef55b Okuma avenger av65a Mitchell 300 Shimano 3500b
  25. This question is inspired by Beastly Backlash's "Reels for Sharks" thread, which, as of this post, is still on the page. Also, it's 11 F outside, and college football doesn't interest me. Accurate was, AFAIK, the first firm to the American market with dual drag surfaces, one on each side of the spool. Okuma liked the idea well enough so that the Makaira reels also use a dual-drag system. (I don't know whether Okuma licensed Accurate's patents, or whether they developed their own, or whether they're too big and rich for Accurate to be able to afford a courtroom fight over patent rights.) A question for those anglers here who have fished with either a Makaira or one of Accurate's dual-drag products (Boss Extreme, Dauntless Extreme, or ATD). Do these reels actually do a better job of tiring and landing fish? The design superiority of braking a spool by washer pressure on both sides is clear. But does it show up in real-world usage?
