I could use some help on a reel selection I am trying to make for light tackle freshwater fishing. I recently picked up a St. Croix Avid Medium light rod, lure rating 1/16-3/8th oz. I am going to be throwing a light of lightweight jigs, such as Maribou jigs with this setup. I am in South Florida and this setup will laregly be usef for freshwater fishing, targeting peacock bass and largemouth bass and the other random florida canal species that show up here (snakeheads etc). I want a very lightweigh reel to match the light rod, and while a standard approach is to consider a 1k-2k reel, its seems nowadays, some of the "nicer reels", say like a Shimano Vanford, will only gain a half oz in wieght when you go up to the 2500 size from the 1000 size, yet you get 22lbs of drab vs 8 lbs of drag,. Now I realize you will never need more than 8lbs of drag for freshwater fishing, but if I buy the 2500 vanford vs the 1000 vanford, then I can always take the reel and throw it on one of my saltwater setups if I ever want more versatility from that same reel. Do you agree with my logic? Or do you think there is an advantage to buying a reel like a vanford and staying in that 1k-2k size range even though its not all that much lighter of a reel than the 2500 or even the 3000 size? In addition, is there any reel you would recommend that you specifially like for this application? Has anyone tried JDM Daiwa Luvias? I am open to suggestions as long as the reel is lightweight. I already own a Vanford and love it, but like to try new reels. I appreciate any insights you can provide. Many thanks.

I'm looking for recommendations on a solid light tackle trolling reel for my kayak (Old Town Sportsman Bigwater 132 PDL). I mainly troll in freshwater reservoirs in Maryland and Virginia right now but also plan to do more in brackish (Chesapeake and Potomac). I want something light tackle preferably under 18 oz, ideally under 15 oz if possible. I've looked at everything for hours including both conventional and baitcaster reels. I don't want to use spinning, mainly because I already have spinning I use to troll when I go super light (Shimano Nasci/Spheros 3000 for 2oz or less works like a dream). I want a reel to troll bucktails, Alabama rigs, umbrellas, tandem rigs, spoons etc, mainly for stripers but also for musky and walleye in the future. Targeting fish in the 5-30lb range mainly. I don't have an exact price range, I more want a medium to high end reel that will last and be light and smooth (let's assume between $125-$300). I feel like having a clicker is almost mandatory. Multi-purpose isn't necessary but is nice to have (i.e. being able to cast as well as troll isn't mandatory). I'm torn between levelwind or not, and conventional vs low-profile/circlular or high-capacity baitcasters. I have looked at the following and none have stood out as a clear winner. I would love to hear your all's thoughts on any of these reels or any I haven't listed. - Seigler SG/SGN - Accurate Fury 400 and Valiant (the latter not being worth money imo) - Avet SX and SXJ - Daiwa Lexa CC - Shimano Tranx (no clicker sucks) - Okuma Komodo SS - Shimano Calcutta - Daiwa Saltist 20H Also, if anyone has any rod recs to pair for the kayak I am all ears

I am getting ready to move and have decided to slowly move some of my gear that I don't have a use for! Here I have 2 new in box reels from Penn. I will upload pictures for them in a bit once I step away from my computer. The first one is a Penn 420 SSG that has never been taken out of the box except to look at it. It has never been fished and is just collecting dust in my basement. Its a perfect light tackle reel. Asking $55 shipped or $45 local pickup. (Live in Bristol and can travel just about anywhere in southern RI) The second reel is a Penn 4500 SS that also has never been fished. It also comes with with the original box and paperwork as well. Asking $85 shipped or $75 picked up. This reel was Made in the USA and comes stamped with that under the reel seat and the box reflects that as well. Both reels are mechanically and cosmetically 10/10, I just have no use for them and they have been sitting on a shelf for the past 5+ years! Let me know if there are any questions you need answered! Thanks guys

Just picked up some new gear for inshore. Star Seagis SK614FT76. they call it a light but it is medium light based on other rods I have. They make this rod with split grip and full grip. The grip length was suppose to be shorter on the full grip but it is 18", 2 inches longer then my 7'6" Tidemaster. Not crazy about that. The rod is beautiful and matches my BG2500 perfectly. It seems a bit nicer then the tidemaster. The weights are the same. The Seagis is .1 oz lighter then my Tidemaster but that is just manufacturing variation. I like the action a bit better. It bends into the blank a bit more but is about the same speed as the tidemaster. Plus I got it on Sale for 135.00 so it was a steal at that price.

Tica UGSA80M2S Dolphin Surf Spin Fish Rod, 8-Feet , 2-Piece, ,1/2 to 2 oz, 6-17 lb Tica UGSA-90M2S Dolphin Surf Spin Rod, 9-Feet, 2-Piece, 1/2 to 3 oz, 10-25 lb Stellar Lite Fast Taper SG1220FT80 Spinning 12-20 lb, 1/2 - 1 1/2 oz, 8' 1 pc. Med-Heavy Stellar Lite Fast Taper SG1525FT80 Spinning 15-25 lb, 5/8 - 2 oz, 8' , 1 pc.Heavy Looking for a spinning rod for my BG 4000 to fish the san fransico bay for stripers and grubing for perch and schoolie stripers in the surf. I throw mostly 1/2 oz size hair raisers , swimbaits and kastmasters in the bay but also throw SP minnows. In the surf it will be 1/2 to 1oz lead on carolina rig for perch and 1/2 to 2 oz hair raiser, swimbaits and metal for stripers. I have not found the rods above locally to see how they feel and would like to know how close to lure ratings are these rods. For the bay most of what I throw will be 1/2 to 3/4 oz and in the surf 3/4 to 1 1/2 oz. Does any of the rods above stand out over the others? I do like that the Ticas are 2 pc but the stellars may be higher quality rod. The "concept system" on the stellar fast tapers concerns me in a store bought rod as it can't be matched to my BG 4000. Thanks for any and all input. Craig

Does anyone own one of those pen size fishing rods? I don't know if they're a nice challenge for sea robins and scup or a scam.
