  1. Girlfriend went ahead and ordered herself a new reel without talking to me about it first and endud up with something much bigger than she wanted. Anyone get a new BG 4000 or possibly 4500 that they then decided they wanted bigger? Let me know.
  2. WTS - Daiwa BG 4000 Pre-Spooled with 20lb J Braid, I will take $95 (includes shipping, Pay Pal only) Barely used BG with absolutely no signs of wear. The reel has been used twice, once in saltwater the other in freshwater. Never dunked, dropped, or has sand anywhere near it. I have two BG 4000's, trying to sell some of my gear. One very small scratch on the plastic cap on left hand retrieve. Opened box and professionally spooled with 20lb J braid. Ready to fish! Retail with braid is $130, I will take $90, I can split the shipping so $95 shipped (US only). I am in the North Jersey area.
  3. Hello there fishos. ;D * This post is going to be a little rough at first but eventually I will round it out to be a worthy service tutorial. The reel is very simple and mostly incorporates established Daiwa tech and methods of construction that we are familiar with in a new and sexy package. This new Daiwa BG "sw" (saltwater) reel is the new foundation that Daiwa is going to build their entry level heavy duty saltwater line upon, replacing the older Saltist with this new version and also offering another new Saltist with a "mag-sealed" pinion assembly. These remain one of the top high speed budget reels for use in the saltwater providing the retrieval speed that some tropical species love (ie Jacks and Tuna). Needless to say those bruisers also beat up reels and a robust reel is a needed. The old BG we remember will still be a budget offering and remains in the Daiwa line. Meet the Black Gold Saltwater BG 5000: This is a Stripers Online Amazon Affiliate link. Added by Scoobydoo "Alan Hawk" went over the clutch in some detail. It does have stainless springs inside (rather than less expensive plastic leaves) but it is not particularly well supported by the body, imo. At this point I have to defer to Daiwa that their design is sound, I just like to see some "meat" around it. The line roller bushings are polyphthalamide and should be an improvement over the older Saltist. They certainly won't corrode like a bearing but if they wear the roller will start to make noise (no different than any other company's, of course). The line roller screw may need some blue loctite to stay tight. The Drive Gear is very large, and this is a bonus for power transmission as well as thicker and tougher teeth for longevity, albeit it remains a cast Alu/Zinc alloy gear with brass pinion. There is no pinion bushing above the rotor, this may cause some wear and a little binding under load over time (small issue). It does have a top notch back up AR and (apparently, I am no bearing Sleuth) very nice SS bearings, but there is not a seal of significance to be found in the reel. So you are going to have to baby it in the salt and around sand. Dunking is no bueno. The good news about the lack of seals or sealed bearings is it is beautifully free spinning and smooth and very light (~22 oz un-spooled for a reel that will hold 300 yards of 65 lb braid). If you take care of it, it will be a joy to fish. That, it's high speed retrieve (47 IPT) and a top notch drag (de rigeur with spinning reels these days) make it very solid for ~$100. Of course, for twice that you get a whole 'nother class of reel, imo. Tincture of time will tell the tale, AH was very smitten with it but with these budget reels we can only take that so far, albeit this reel is every bit the reel the old Saltist was for nearly half the price. A extremely solid value. best
