  4. 9.9/10 Avid Salmon Steelhead rod for sale - lightly used about 4-5 times, the little bit of dirt on cork below reel seat is the only reason for 9.9...otherwise mint This is a CASTING model, 9’ Medium, 1/4-3/4, 8-12lb line Retails for $260 if you can find it, was discontinued last year... Rod definitely has that unique parabolic without being mushy action for fighting big fish on lighter lines... 7. Have a bunch of St. Croix inshore rods and like them. The Avid series is my favorite of them, but I haven’t tried any of their surf rods yet. Looking for input from anyone who owns or has used this model. Likes and dislikes? Would you buy it again?

  10. Hi Everyone, I need some help. I recently ordered the St. Croix VIS80MHF Avid Inshore Spinning Rod - 8 ft and I need to find a spinning reel to pair with it. I plan to get more serious about striper/blue fishing in cape cod (Eastham/Welfleet area) and this rod will mainly be used in small rivers/estuaries as well as flats. I have been doing some research and I have heard some good options are the Shimano Saragosa 5/6K, Shimano Stradic FL5000, Shimano Spheros 6K, Shimano Sustain, and the Pen Slammer 4500. I was really leaning towards the Stradic FL5000, but my concern is the weight of reel is too light for the rod (roughly 10 oz). This Avid inshore model that I purchased is about 7.5 oz. Do you think I need to pair this rod with a heavier reel in the 12-16 oz range? If so, do you guys have any other recommendations? Also, I would love to hear from anyone who owns this rod on what your setup looks like.

  13. Hi - I need some help with the details before I purchase: looking for help on power, action, and reel size. My specific questions are at the end: I'm looking at a 7' medium power, fast action St. Croix Avid Inshore rod paired with a Shimano Stradic FL in the 5000 size. I am currently using a 9' medium power, moderate fast action Tica TC2 surf rod (1/2 oz to 3oz) which is a little much for smaller lures and definitely not giving any sensitivity when I am using anything under 1oz. I love casting from the surf but there are so many awesome bays around here. Ultimately I want a 7' inshore, a 9' all-around and an 11' rod for jetties/inlets, big surf. I want something that will excel in bay fishing....looking for something that can provide long casts, sensitive enough to feel bottom with bucktail jigs, can handle stripers and blues (maybe fluke and weakfish, and can be a versatile pole I can have some fun with. I had a couple questions: Does this setup make sense for fishing in the bays around Long Island? Does a medium power, fast action pole make sense (think 3/8 to 3/4 oz lures are ok)? Or would you step up to a medium heavy, fast action (1/2 to 1 & 1/4oz). Or something else? Would you go 4000 or 5000 size for the reel? Tempted to go 5000 which gets me a nicer knob and more line (4000 and 5000 are same physical size I believe) Does 7' rod make sense here or should I go 7'6" or 8'? Also if anyone has any suggestion for quality braid that would make sense for this setup. Thanks everyone. I am new around here and basically a hack, vying for the title of 'worst fisherman on Long Island' so any advice would be greatly appreciated. Attached a pic of my latest striper from earlier this week.
  14. Selling two 8' surf rods. Not shipping, pick up only on the CT shoreline 1. St Croix Avid surf AVSS80mmf, fast action rated 3/4-3oz. 9 out of 10 cosmetic as there are a couple superficial scratches. Rod was used less than a dozen times. Retail $260, asking $175 2. lamiglass xs81ms 8' rated 1/2-2oz, moderate action. Rod is 10 out of 10. I test casted this one time last spring and decided to go with an inshore 8'instead. Not sure they still make this model anymore. Retail is $236, asking $160. Any questions, just ask.
  15. Hey everyone, this is my first post so please don't kill me just yet! I currently fish the nj surf with a St Croix Avid Surf 9'6" 2-6oz. It is an absolutely amazing rod and I love the action, but the other day I took it out to a field to measure my casts, and I was underwhelmed. I always thought that, despite the rod ratings, it threw bucktails and soft plastics pretty far. I never really had an issue not reaching fish and was impressed at how well it threw the lighter jigs. Well on the field, the 1oz & 1.5oz bucktails and plastics only flew around 60yards with no wind. Even mag darters only flew 70ish yards. The 1 ounce metal flew about 90yds, and 2oz flew easily over 100yds. Now I know that these distances arent that bad, but my friend was casting beside me with his st croix legend surf rated 1-4, and the same bucktails and plastics flew an easy 80yds. We both have the same casting technique and we both were using 40lb pp braid. So here is my question: should I sell my avid and upgrade to the 10' 1-4oz version or just suck it up and continue fishing how I have been? and If the answer is to sell and get the lighter rating, what rods rated 1-4oz and around the same price (about $300) would you recommend? Thanks Everyone!
  16. Looking to unload a barely used St Croix Avid Inshore. Never been used in saltwater, only a handful of trips in freshwater throwing keitechs and drop shotting. Would make a great back bay rod throwing weightless plastics or small swimbaits on light jig heads. Model #: VIS76MLF Length: 7’6” Power: Medium Light Action: Fast Line Rating: 6-12 lb Lure Rating: 1/8 - 1/2 oz Rod Weight: 4.5 oz Retail Price: $250 Asking $150, picked up near Egg Harbor Twp, NJ 08234. I may be going up to the Saltwater Expo in Edison on Saturday, March 16th. I can bring the rod with me if you’re interested and will be at the show. Cy **REEL NOT INCLUDED**
  17. I recently purchased a new St. Croix Avid Series Surf Spinning Rods (MHF2, 96) and it's simply too stiff for my use. I used it one outing and caught 5 fish with it. I'm looking to trade for a Medium power surf spinning rod in the 10-11' range. I've bene using a Mojo surf spinning MM 10'6" rod and it works much better than the stiffer Avid. I'm looking for something as sensitive as the Mojo and preferably something even more sensitive. I'm throwing 2-3.5oz. I'd like to trade straight across or I can add funds for a better rod. Let me know what you got? Thanks
  18. WTS old style St Croix Avid Surf 9' 0.5-2.5oz (ASRS90M). One piece. Good shape overall. Cork tape in good shape, some scuffs on blank, typical cracks and discoloration of epoxy with age. Can handle a bit more than 2.5oz if necessary. More moderate than the new style Avid Surfs, but still has a nice crisp feel. Located in SE CT, but I occasionally travel through RI to the north shore of MA. $100 picked up.
  19. One-piece in like new condition, model AVSS80MMF, rated 3/4 - 3 oz. 22" butt to stem. $220 picked up in Ocean County NJ, not shipping. More/other pics upon request.
  20. I've been eyeing the VIS76HF because I need a spinning boat rod that I'm also hoping can accommodate some light surf fishing. I throw 1.3oz on average and live on the beach so the rod would probably see more sand than boats (but I'm set on surf rods). I went to Striper Day and St Croix didn't have any avid inshores so I'm looking for some SOL guidance. Is this the right rod for me or should I consider something slightly shorter / longer with a different rating? St Croix is giving me $160 to use towards an upgrade so I'm sticking with this brand and I'd like to avoid split grips if possible. Thanks for your help
