  1. I own 4 BG 5000's and a Saltist 4000 and they're great. I have them set up on 3 St. Croix 7' HM Tidemasters for stripers/blues/albies, and a 4th on a St. Croix Mojo 10'6" surf rod. While they're durable and powerful rods, they're a bit heavy and overkill for spring schoolie fishing and funnyfish in the fall. I just purchased a medium-moderate 7' St. Croix Avid for a finesse setup. I've had my eyes on the new Stradic FL for months because of its light weight and smooth retrieve. My biggest question that I'm struggling with is what size to get. I'm torn between the 3000 and the 4000. I like the idea of having as small/light of a reel as possible for making fights with smaller fish more fun, but I want to make sure that the reel could handle a fight with a 20+ pounder if I happen to hook into a larger bass/gator blue. Looking for insight. I've only fished Daiwa and Penn reels in the past and am new to Shimano reels and the Stradic line. I've been hearing great things about the Stradic FL, but don't know anyone personally that's used it for stripers/blues/albies. Thanks!
  2. Hi, I recently got a Penn Slammer 5500 and I was looking to pair it with an inshore rod to fish on the boat/back bays. I have 30 lb braid on my Slammer and was looking at a Lamiglas B7030s, but would like to see if anyone had other rods that paired well with their Slammer 5500. Thanks!
  3. Hello, I am new to this website and I am an avid 14 year old fisherman. I go to the canal probably around twice a year. I have not caught a fish yet and have only been twice. I think my gear is not good enough because I can't cast very far and I don't know any locations. Is the TFO GIS Mag Surf rod a good option? Could anybody drop an easy but good location that I could get to. Also could anybody give me recommendations on rods that can cast 5oz plus jigs and poppers. Can somebody also explain to me the new/full moon and the breaking tides thing and when that occurs. Thanks so much!
  4. Hello, I am 14 years old and love fishing. I live about an 1 1/2 hours from plum island and go fishing there in the summer. It is sometimes very costly for me to go because of the time waste if I don't catch anything. I was wondering if anybody has any intel on fishing the merrimack river for stripers by surfland bait and tackle or in other words the mouth of the river. Any comments are appreciated. Thanks!
  5. My first time tying up the Betsy. I’ve never fished the fly before but I just really liked BFDs pattern, use of materials and the story behind it. I tried it in a few different sizes and colors but I’m still trying to work out the right amount of materials. I’m using supreme hair, sf blend, and crystal flash/ lateral scale. If anyone wants to throw out some pointers or tips it would be much appreciated. Also if anyone can let me know if these are better tied sparse or a bit thicker.
  6. Hi All, I am NausetDog's older brother. I'm getting into fly fishing again after my first foray some 40 years ago. I'm looking forward to catching my first Striper on a fly!!! Regards, NausetFog

  10. Hi, My name is Connor Smilon I’m a junior at Stockton University. For my stats class, we had to come up with an experiment and I chose to see if there is a relationship between incoming storms and increased feeding among marine fish due to the pressure change. On The Water was kind enough to post it to their website. Attached below is a 5-minute survey and a little info about the topic.

  12. Fish around Boston and Lower Cape often. I am planning on going to the canal. Instead of going during the sunrise and low tide rush, I am planning on going at high tide in the evening. Never fished the canal before but hoping for some advice. Is the East End better at high tide? Planning on casting top-water plugs.
  13. How do you guys like to fish? I usually give a spot 30-45 minutes before I head to a different one if there's no action there. I just wonder if I'm missing out by not waiting it out and fishing that spot long enough on a particular tide...
  14. Hey all, Just wondering when you usually catch your first striper of the year in any given state. Just curious, Thanks
  15. Hey everyone, Last year was the first year in a boat trolling tube n worm for stripers. Did very well in rivers where depths maxed out at 35' (all the way down to 4') using unweighted tubes with 40-50# braided fishing line. I am wondering if it would be beneficial to add an egg sinker (and what weight to add) for deeper water? Or would it be worth it to get a dedicated lead core setup? Ive seen many posts online that say the tube *needs* to be close to the bottom or close to where the stripers are, but clearly that isn't true from my experience. I'm just wondering if its worth the money to go lead core to get the tube down further, especially if it would help me catch bigger or more fish. Obviously adding a lead weight won't cost much and I'll definitely be trying it out this season. Also, I did not have any luck fishing the ocean (Long Island Sound, CT side) with the tube and worm. Would getting my tube down deeper help in this situation? Fished a few times near reefs and shoreline/structure with no luck. Thanks! Sharing your experiences or adding your input would be very beneficial.
  16. We typically head up to Maine for a few weeks camping and surf cast fishing. Anyone know about camp grounds there? How about surf cast fishing? We have never visited but it looks very interesting for a new place for vaca. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks!
  17. Hi guys, as the striper season is weaning towards the end, I am going out to denver, colorado for a little 5 day vacation and the weather is going to be perfect to fish for stocked stripers and or wipers if possible, I will be out there with my plugs and soft plastics hoping to wake a few up, has anyone tried this before? Striper fishing in ponds and lakes can be wicked different than the surf and was wondering if you guys had any tips & or places to hit in denver for advice and etc. Just gonna snoop around not too far from denver so we may not travel too far out, thanks!
  18. What are the rules for fishing at Sandy Hook at night? Can I just drive in at 12:30am tonight and fish? Is there a gate? What's the deal?
  19. I know that there are probably a million posts on this site about rods and reels, but I still wanted to ask everyone about them. I wanted to get a Penn Spinfisher V 4500 size and a St Croix Mojo Surf 10 foot Medium Moderate Fast. I'll be mostly fishing Block Island and Long Island during the summer for blues and stripers from the surf (maybe the occasional albie). Was thinking about 20 lb braid. Does anyone have any suggestions? The reason I picked the Spinfisher is because it has a completely enclosed case and I want it to last a while. I was looking at the Battle 2 but it has all those holes and I don't want it to get filled with sand and water. Thanks
  20. What does the Fall migration look like in the Seacoast area? are there any rules of thumb when the bigger fish start to leave and then schoolies etc? There is definately a lot of buzz and excitement here about their arrival in the spring- but when do they start to move out and what does that look like? First Year fishing for Stripers in the Seacoast, Reading threw this years and previous years threads have been really helpful- Thanks for all of the shared information, I hope to be in a position to pass it on at some point.
  21. flats

Dare I ask - How do I buy the proper parking permit for fishing areas out on the East End of Long Island - in mid-October. I'm ok with the local rich people making it difficult to fish anything out there except crowded ole' Montauk - but just don't make it impossible for me please. I know all those other areas out there hold fish often.
  22. Hi All, new to the community here, I will be in Goose Rocks Beach Maine for a few days, I primarily surf cast in southern RI and the CCC. I am planning on trying surf casting over there but have a bay boat to get a little further out there if the shore fishing is slow. I was planning on loading up on mackerel Al Gags and poagie chunking. I have lots of top water plugs and divers, needles etc, any recommendations for that costal area?
  23. New to the Portland area and curious to hear some favorites from locals: 1. Tide/time of day? 2. Top water lure? 3. Swim/crank bait? 4. Colors? 5. Any local shops or people making good bucktails? So far I've been fishing the outgoing at dawn at a tidal river with moderately strong current. I've had some success using techniques that have worked for me in NYC/cape cod waters using white bucktails, bone sp minnow, tsunami swim shad and white/blue talkin popper, but I'm wondering if any locals have some experienced advice to offer. Thanks for any info, Ryan
  24. So I have a question I’m in the market for a new reel for stripers, blues and bottom fishing....so it’s between Avet MXL 5.8 and the Seigler Small game....so I’m coming here for your honest opinion on which one would you purchase and why?
  25. So pretty much I always see people recommending types of reels and rods but never actually see numbers example (fishing for fluke 7ft rod 20-30lb rated; single speed reel 5.2.1-6.0.1 that can handle 300 yards 30lb braid with 15 pound drag max....so I am curious what are you recommendations for type of fish. I don’t want to know brands of rods or reels but more of the technical items u need to fight these fish I think this type of info definitely helps out. Add any other species you like to the list. 1. Fluke/sea bass 2. Blackfish 3. Stripers/blues 4. Weakfish 5. Cod 6. YFT
