At the beginning of the year the plans where made for several road trips but then came the China virus and it all fell apart. I feared this would be a lost year fishing wise but besides the local venues I actually managed one road trip now. The opportunity arose for a trip to the Harz mountains despite the current troubles and so I took the chance to visit the east for a few days. With travel so restricted the area was crowded by tourist but just a few anglers so we had the water mostly for ourselves. Getting a place to stay was difficult but we managed to find lodging at the preferred hotel near the river. The walkers however where walking single file on the mountains trails, not my idea of fun but no bother when you standing down in the river. As it was high summer even high up the temps where high and with frequent light showers it was pretty damp. Season was almost to an end so I figured fishing would be tough but the pretty small native browns where plenty at certain spots. Having been in the area many times local knowledge paid off as the sections that usually where stocked with rainbow trout still held some fish. I had a splitcane rod and the glass rod with me but the glass would be the weapon of choice. I was frowned upon by my dry fly buddy as I used the despicable squirmy but the local wild trout did not complain so I was good with that. As we where both a bit unflexible what fishing methods where concerned we both did well be it at different times. With the trout season up in the mountains ending on Sept. 15th we did some quick thinking and arranged a second trip in a few weeks. Should be good.
