  1. Also use 30 pound braid, I use 40 pound fluorocarbon, normally tie on with an alberto knot that I pass the tag through the loop thrice for extra security. I use about 3-6 feet of leader depending on where I'm fishing. For the lure, I'll either just use a 4-5 turn uni knot or a TA clip if I have one on me.
  2. If somebody put a gun to my head and told me "catch a bluefish over 8 inches off the beach", I'd be dead. Maybe once a year I'll catch a 5 or 6 inch bluefish on the beach with a small chunk on a hi-lo rig. I've caught a couple nice ones while shad fishing though, guess they're just farther out on the beach.
  3. I use green suffix 832 on just about everything from my smallmouth rigs to my drum and shark rods. Only exception is my conventional heaver, I have suffix coastal camo on it because I thought it looked cool and I can see it a little better at night. I run a 7–12-foot shock leader on that rod and I catch the same amount of fish on that as I do on the ones with green braid. As long as you have a fairly long (4 feet or more I'd say) shock leader, you'll be fine with just about any color of braid.
  4. I have the Squall II CS. Love it. Caught rays and sharks ~6 feet/100 pounds and medium (36") stripers on it and it handles just fine. I set the magnets to the halfway point and let it rip, casts very nicely, have it on a 12' Penn Battalion rated to 12 oz. I have 50 pound suffix 832 on it. Great entry-level reel if you're just getting started with conventionals on the beach, very user friendly, it was my first conventional surf reel. I did have to set the drag different from the stock settings ("versa-drag" is what Penn calls it) so it could handle the stray shark/big ray that comes along when I'm drum/striper fishing. Can't speak for the Omoto reel though. A plus to the Penn is easy part accessibility, like BrianBM said. I'd say get the squall, especially if you're just starting out. As you get better at using and handling conventionals, then you can branch out to other reels more.
  5. Husky jerk in the larger sizes 4.5 inch sluggo Zoom Fluke Paddletail of some sort Bucktail If I narrowed it down to one it'd be the 4.5 sluggo. Caught big bass, little bass, and the in-between on them. Versatility is amazing with them
  6. The beaches I fish are all bait, so chunking with a fishfinder rig or hi-lo depending on bait and time of year. For bass, I use what I would for big red/black drum and small/medium sharks. I'd like to plug but it's not worth it most of the time. Heave and believe. Penn Prevail 12' rated to 10 oz if I remember right Penn SSVI 6500 live liner 40 pound suffix 832 60 pound mono shock Penn Battalion II 12' rated to 12 oz Penn Squall 15 Casting Special 50 pound suffix 832 60 pound mono shock I set them both out at different distances and set them in a rod holder with a chunk of bunker/mullet/spot or fleas in the spring. Caught my first 40" bass last spring on the SSVI setup while fishing for black drum, handled the fish well. Hopefully this spring I can catch a 40 pounder instead
  7. Could you elaborate a bit on this please? I'm intrigued, don't really fish DE anymore but still.
  8. X9 is a wonderful braid. Landed many tog and sheepshead with 20lbs on jettys using lighter tackle and now using that same braid for my whiting rod on the beach, just flipped it. It and 832 are the only braids I'd ever use for the beach. I lean towards 832, just because I'm more familiar with it and it's slightly cheaper, but they're fairly comparable.
  9. I don't trust Kastking. First time I heard about it was from some guy on youtube who does microfishing. Seems like it was all he used and he spoke highly of it (almost certainly sponsored), so even with that in mind I said what the heck. I needed a cheap baitcaster so I got one of the Royale Legend reels. Never had a reel so loud, it buzzed like a swarm of bees, and you could feel it too. Fell apart eventually. Tried their cheaper braid, Superpower I think it is, Bled like crazy, tested it and it broke under the stated lb-test (30 broke around 20-25 - not absolutely horrible but just about any name brand breaks higher than stated strength.) Ended up just tossing most of it and keeping some for home projects. Also tried their "Fluoroclear," wasn't terribly stiff, plenty strong, but there's better. Granted, the baitcaster was maybe $40. Idk about their higher-priced items, but from the experience I've had, I'll stick to Penn, Shimano, Sufix, etc, just to be safe. Never really had any luck with amazon brands. TBF never used the spinning reels and I've heard they're good, for the price at least. Good luck with your purchase, whatever you decide to buy.
  10. Glad you were able to get back out there. Your dad would have wanted you to keep hitting the sand. Beautiful fish too. Happy Thanksgiving to you as well, and everybody else too
  11. This is about what happened with me, after racking my brain I vaguely remember hearing about it a while ago and like you said it disappeared. I guess we'll see what's to come in the next couple of months. Canary mentioned the possibility of HS models, that would definitely be interesting, but since there's already a slammer HS I don't know.
  12. Just now heard about the VII coming out. Is there any difference between these two reels? It doesn't really seem like it other than a different design on the spool but admittedly I haven't looked at it very heavily.
  13. I fish for bass through the ice season, after it thaws, I typically wait till April/May to start up again. Some of my biggest LMB have been through the ice, typically while jigging for panfish with larger teardrop jigs. I'll also catch them on tip-ups with fatheads/shiners. I used to think bass kind of went dormant in the winter, but now I normally catch more bass through the ice than in open water (I will admit I don't really target LMB in open water, mostly SMB instead, but they overlap where I fish.) Granted, they are more lethargic but they're still around and willing to eat as long as you give them what they want. Nothing like pulling up a 6 pounder on a noodle rod
  14. Fished for four days, ended up with nothing but skates. I'm fairly certain I missed a drum because I jumped the gun on the hookset but it was probably just another skate. Did catch some whiting too. After getting nothing much on the beach I focused more on doing some tog fishing and was pleasantly surprised, caught a fair amount of 16"+ along with some sheepshead and schoolie stripers. Hope next year is better on the beach, good luck to you guys still out there.
  15. Thanks for the tips guys. Hoping to break my redfish skunk this year. This year I learned a lot about reading the beach but I still have a ways to go. Good luck out there
  16. Had something on my mind. One of the first pieces of advice I was given when I started surf fishing was to set a rod in close and a rod far out. I'm good at the far out part, but when guys say "in close", do they mean 20-30 yards from the wash or 20-30 feet? I've been wondering if I've been setting my "close in" rod too far out. Thanks
  17. bump. thankful for this thread and the other one linked above. really learned a lot from them.
  18. Second this, minus the hot sauce. Not really my style, normally I don't use sauce for fish of any kind. Other than that, I typically won't eat anything more than what's considered a snack on the beach, think saltines, fruit, pbj sandwiches. Just to keep myself from getting too hungry out there. I would cook more on the beach but I find it easier to just eat before or after I'm done fishing. I will say though, there is something about snacking on crackers while watching my rods that's just peaceful to me lol.
  19. Well I tend to catch a lot of skates when I fish for drum (black and red.) As for skateboards I've never touched one, and something tells me I wouldn't be very good at it lol.
  20. Stunning, very, very well made. These paintings are absolutely wonderfully made, great details. I also thought the first painting with the nomads was a photo lol. Keep up the good work buddy. Tight lines
  21. In early may there will probably be black drum around, along with stripers, skates, and some rays and sharks. I myself have yet to catch a striper off of AI but people still catch then every now and then. As for clamming, from a quick search it does look like you’re allowed to harvest them without a license as a resident and as a non-resident only in Worcester county, which is AI. Here’s where I found that: * Best of luck to you out there.
  22. I want to finally catch a redfish off the beach. My mindset has been bad and I’ve been too quick to judge a spot (or even the season as a whole) but this year I’m gonna go into it more patient and I’m gonna try some different things. I think a simple mindset change is the key here, along with some fresh bait too. I’d also like to do some more kayak fishing, simply because it’s both fun and good exercise from all the paddling.
  23. I actually learned to snell from that same video. Landed many large fish with it and never had an issue. I think this knot is stronger than a clinch. I've never had a knot failure with it and the line (or even hook sometimes) breaks before the snell fails.
