  1. On a few plugs I have sealed the through wire bore and hole for the belly hook withy the penetrating epoxy and gone with 3 coats of Autoborne direct to the wood, this works pretty well but I think the epoxy sealer firms up the AYC more than just the autoborne. I am actually going to step back on my tuna poppers and go penetrating epoxy, autoborne, matte uvls, color coats, matte uvls, and 2-3 epoxy coats instead of 2K. The guys are loving the tuna poppers I am making but I am concerned about the level of destruction that a 100 lbs tuna does to the finish.
  2. I use Acetone to cut it, like 1cc in 20cc of that Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy which is really thin to begin with. I used to use that KBS Diamond Clear to dip for a while but it got old quick. Once you spray you won't go back.
  3. Not in my experience, even on big toothy critters. I think it is all in the prep work and undercoats. I followed the advice of a bunch of well known builders that helped me. After sanding to 320 I use a penetrating epoxy sealer on the AYC plug and allow to fully cure 48 hours. Then Createx Autoborne sealer two coats, followed by Createx paints, and allow that to fully cure for another 2 days. I think keeping within that company's line allows everything to work well together. My workshop has a dehumidifier and is about 72-74 degrees so after 2-3 days the HC-9500. When I started doing it like this, I was making bigger spooks and intentionally cast it the prototype into rocks and dragged it through the sand. In some ways to me it just feels harder than what I was getting with epoxy, even after a week of curing. The one caveat is you need awesome ventilation and a respirator to use it.
  4. Try Tamco HC-9500 2K automotive clear. Sprays really easy. You can do 3 on day one, 3 minutes between coats, and then 3 coats 12 hours later. Hard as a rock in mile 30 minutes.
  5. Total Boat Penetrating epoxy to seal the plug thinned with just a touch of acetone. After a 2 day cure I hit it with 2 coats of Autoborne Sealer / Primer. On my tuna poppers I add a UVLS matte coat or two. Makes a pretty indestructible base coat to paint on.
  6. Ok so I know some plug builders do it, and the VMC folks say not to do it...How many of you out there have been cutting you VMC treble hooks to fit directly to a belly swivel for your plugs. Someone asked me to do it for them on a couple of spooks I was building for them but declined after I saw what VMC said. What have your experiences been, specifically with the VMC hooks?
  7. If you are only fishing 10x per year than a VS is total overkill. Save the money and use it to get the kids rods and reels, you can never start too young.
  8. I make a wooden spook that weighs in at 1.6 oz...there is a gap in the commercial size range. Getting the size and weight balance correct to walk the dog is the reason I think why there are not more sizes out there. This which is why I created this one.
  9. I used the 3M Pro, swap out the paint filters for dust filters when I go from chemicals to pure saw dust. The most important aspect of the mask is fit, fit, and fit. Just make sure you have the correct filter for what you are doing or using.
  10. Best advise is when you go to the store, try out different combos. I love the VSX200 paired with the Carbon Surf 10.5. The GSB in the 10 pairs nice with it well. The VR series I like the 175 with it.
  11. Power Pro Original, still my one and only after all these years.
  12. when was it purchased and last serviced
  13. I have been watching this for a while now and would do $550 also. My concerns are with this is that it is a reel long out of warranty, and that has never been serviced in its entire life. Four years is a long time for the grease in it to have never been changed, despite you saying it has only been used twice. Just sending it in for service puts me out another $49.95 plus $20 shipping.
