  1. Kayak fishing in saltwater…you want simple, reliable, easy to maintain and inexpensive (for when you dump your kayak and lose it. i really like the UglyStick Tiger Elite Jigging and a Daiwa Sealine reel. The setup would run a couple hundred and last forever if taken care of. You could substitute the reel for a Penn Fathom or Squall 25N for a little more complex reel to maintain. I would hop on eBay and find an old Daiwa Sealine but that’s me. I love how easy they are to tear down and service and you can still find them in good condition and cheap. An old Penn Senator is the same idea but not quite as well made as the Daiwa. I have the Ugly Stick Tiger Elite Jigging 5’8” 100-200lb with a Penn US Senator on it for heavy weight and the same rod in 6’3” 50-100ib with a Penn Fathom 25N on that one. They are actually a pretty good general bottom and jigging rods and I’ve heard they are popular with kayak fishermen.
  2. I have a Penn Battalion Inshore rod that I just can’t put down. I fish it along side rods that are much more expensive and it just doesn’t disappoint. Mine is rated for 1/4 - 1oz and it throws everything well. It’s just over $100 but you could probably find it on sale somewhere I’m sure.
  3. I have a Tern 2 in 400 size and it is an excellent reel. I haven’t had a backlash yet. I want another but I can’t decide on a size, they are all nice. The 400 size is about the same as an Avet MXJ (which I also have a couple of). I only wish Accurate offered them in some fun colors like Avet does (without the $100 markup). I have the Tern 2 on a 10’ GSB from the 80’s and I will swap it onto a Rainshadow Judge 20-50 live bait rod when appropriate. If it weren’t for the price I’d already have more in every size. My only complaint is that it requires a very specific tiny torque bit to disassemble and they didn’t even include it with the reel. I had to buy 3 different ones before I got a driver that would fit (it is a very deep set hole I believe a #6 if I remember correctly). I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend a Tern if you got the budget. edit: added photo. Top Avet MXJ, bottom Tern 2 400
  4. Daiwa Sealine is still readily available, cheap and easy to upgrade and maintain. I’ve got tons of them and just LOVE them! My current collection includes: 3 x 27H 3 x 47H 3 x 300H 3 x 350H 2 x 400H 3 x 600H The Penn U.S. Senator is also a great reel but is on the larger side (Penn 113 or Daiwa 400 size) and twice the price of a vintage Daiwa Sealine. That said, I can completely tear down, clean and relube any of them in about 15 minutes or less.
  5. I can’t find it on their website, or even on google. Heck, I’d even take a cheap Chinese Amazon knockoff if that’s all I can find. It’s pretty cool and super handy!
  6. What is attached to the frame foot in the last photo?
  7. You mean like the last one tried to do? I guess we’ll see what the SCOTUS has to say about Presidential immunity and then it’s gonna be a mess around here. I’m no Biden fan but there’s a bunch of hypocrites in here.
  8. Zack’s Custom Rods, Crafty One and Aquidneck Island Rod Builders are great choices. I’ve used all three. Ted at Aquidneck would be the first place I call for a rebuild though.
  9. I’ve tried a bunch and the Halco are my favorite for ease of use. I wish the handle was a little better but they are small and lightweight and work perfectly every time. I also have the Shimano and Texas Tackle versions which are decent.
  10. I’m interested at $400 if you’re still offering. It’s technically Monday though (3am). thanks
  11. I went Saturday and it was nice to see some familiar faces. Said hi to Kil and checked out his new line of rods. Picked up a few jigs from Atlantic and K/T. Got some Albie Snax from the Edge. A couple overpriced beers and cheeseburger for lunch. Had to go see Zack and his new rods (too bad I couldn’t buy his latest beauty, that matched my custom stand up rod he built a couple years ago). Picked up a new knife from Joe back there at The Mighty Fish (got one last year as well). Spent a little time over at Visser (thinking of selling my Van Staals to switch over). I had a great time and spent all day at the show. There are always interesting talks to listen in on and plenty of great people to meet and talk to. It’s one of the few places to put your hands on a BUNCH of gear that is not always in stock locally. There aren’t so many “great” deals, but there are some good deals to be had. It’s not about the savings as much as it’s about the experience. Getting OUT of the mall parking lot was a PITA but other than that I had a great time and will be going again next year.
  12. Got the oil, thanks! Now I don’t have to boycott the new Daiwa reels!
  13. Move the bail over to the left side of the reel and it won’t be as likely to snap shut because the heavier line roller will now be on the bottom. Some reels have a brake to help hold the rotor still when the bail is open but I can’t remember if the 5000 does or not, I’m pretty certain it does though. Maybe the brake is not working properly but it wouldn’t hurt to replace the spring if you can find one.
  14. I keep one of these in the back of my truck and rinse everything before I even put it in the car. It only takes a few minutes to run over the rod and guides, the line roller and whatever tackle I used.
  15. He’s not a commercial fisherman but maybe he got it because he was fishing in RI once and didn’t know he didn’t need it for NY as well. Thanks for the heads up.
  16. I don’t understand. What is a “fee based” saltwater license? I thought NY already charged for a saltwater license. I have a buddy that gets an out of state RI license because it’s cheaper than an in-state NY license and they both cover the same waters (he lives in NY).
  17. Ocean State Tackle does have them, I was just there last week and picked up his last 2 GT - Ice Cream Cones and a couple other items I’d been looking for. For such a small location he sure has a TON of stuff. Great shop!
  18. Just received my order today. These are perfect! I’ve got other Knipex tools but had never seen these 8” bolt cutters. I had to remove a hook from my bosses hand last year and was wishing I had something better than side cutters. Thanks for the heads up!
  19. C&C Custom Buck 110 with S30V blade and Micarta scales.
  20. There is a small section of Swansea and Fall River that border Mt. Hope bay but most of it is Rhode Island.
  21. Mass has the same restrictions. You must be a resident.
  22. Rhode Island Regulations for Blue Crab specifically state: E.No person shall take blue crabs from the waters of the State between the hours of sunset and sunrise (R.I. Gen. Laws § 20-7-15). https://rules.sos.ri.gov/regulations/part/250-90-00-5
  23. I can’t speak to a rod recommendation specifically for your area but I would suggest maybe stepping up to the Daiwa BGMQ for a reel. The larger gearing is really nice for the bigger fish. I have the BGMQ4000 on a Bull Bay Stealth Sniper 7’6”MH but depending on your budget the Penn Battalion is a nice rod too and it casts a little heavier lure better as well. I have both rods and the BB is 1/4-3/4oz and the Battalion is 1/4-1oz. I’d get a Gomexus handle for the MQ though as the stock knob is pretty crappy. …having said all that, fishing from a jetty or inlet I’d want something a little heavier, maybe a 3/4-3oz rod. I have an 8’ St. Croix Avid Surf for that range and it’s awesome. I have a Van Staal VR50 on it. Hopefully someone from your area chimes in with better details. Edit: also for lures, I had been looking for a “GT Ice Cream Cone” for a while and I found one locally and my first cast produced a keeper Striper, as did my second, third and fourth casts. I just happened to be in the right place at the right time but the lure was great anyway.
