  1. Hey guys just bumping this thread. Back in RI this summer and want to get back out on the Sakonnet River. Was successful in the bay earlier in the spring and summer when the bass and pogies were plentiful but with the water getting warmer, the bay has come to a screeching halt. Thinking the Sakonnet will be better because it’s more out front and the water will be cooler. Not trying to spot burn but have people had some success in the Sakonnet this year? I know that the more south you go toward Sakonnet Point, the fluke and sea bass are more likely a hook up than stripers. Just looking for some friendly talk again this summer. Thanks guys
  2. With the scup starting to come around, does anyone use them for bait for stripers? Clearly with the pogies around, that’s the best option but does anyone or has anyone used scup for stripers? Thinking of bait options when the pogies either get scooped by commercial boats or the water gets too warm.
  3. Hey Guys, Went out twice this week. Tuesday was more rough on the Sakonnet side so stayed in the bay and tubed & wormed for hours. No bites but ended up landing some keeper scup on a sand eel jig. Wednesday went out the Sakonnet and it was like glass. Could’ve went all the way to Sakonnet Point & Elbow Ledge. Staying by Fogland Pt and tubed and wormed but again only came across a couple schoolies and keeper scup. Hope to get out a couple more times before I get busy in August (football coach).
  4. Appreciate bdowning! Unfortunately I always seem to miss out on the bonito and albies due to my job. My only real saltwater season or fishing season for that matter is May-July.
  5. Thanks Kirona. Again, a novice question. Is it the peanut bunker that’s in right now? From reading and doing research I thought the peanut came in during the Fall? You read, “Match the Hatch” so I’ve been trying to find what bait is in the area but the commercial guys are betting a lot of the pogies which is what it is. Thanks for the response.
  6. Hey guys, new to the message board and located on the Sakonnet River. I'll be honest, more a novice to saltwater fishing than freshwater but I'm working to get better as a saltwater fisherman. Not looking for secret spots or locations, really just want some friendly talk about fishing the Sakonnet River and/or Mount Hope Bay. I know the bay is getting between 72-74 degrees and Common Fence Pt and the Channel there hasn't been producing more than some Porgy. Thinking of going the opposite way and down the Sakonnet and seeing if I can locate some blues and stripers. From a technique standpoint, I have popper plugs, Hogy epoxy jigs, swim baits, and tube & worm. With the water getting warmer, is it better to go early morning? Late night? What's the best time with the tides? Rising tide? Lowering tide? I have the ability to reach places via boat and jetski and I know to try and find the birds for a blitz but recently it's been staring at my depth/fish finder trying to find bait balls. Any and all comments and help would be great. Thanks guys!
