  1. Hi everybody, I hope you are having a great day now. What lubricant do you use for your hobie drive? I have corrosion x at home, the red bottle. I plan to use this on the metal parts. The guy who sold me the used hobie told me to simply use WD40 after each trip. Thanks and have a nice day
  2. Hi everyone, Hope you are having a great day now. I bought an old hobie,2002 hobie mirage classic. Never owned a hobie before. what drive is this? V1? I hope the V1 idler in the attached pic fits this drive. I want to buy V1 idler cable for it. For chain assembly, I only found 1 website that sells v1 chain , but I have never heard of the website before. I plan to buy stainless steel chain and replace broken links if the hobie chain on the drive breaks. For maintenance, I plan to use corrosion x to spray the drive after each use. I am worried about the RUSTED swage on the idler cable. Thank you for reading my post, tight lines!
  3. Hair dryer? I have one, it's hot enough for my hair but I don't think it's hot enough for melting kayak. Heat gun is hot enough? But I am afraid it may damage other parts, like adjacent spots. The crack is actually very small.
  4. Thank you for the reply. I think I will use a heated screw driver to "melt" the crack. And then put some gorilla tape on it as extra protection. I have some sand paper but I forgot what grit it is.
  5. Thank you, I sure will check the rudder line. Do you by any chance know if new drives, like V2 drives, will fit in my old hobie classic kayak? I think maybe they changed the design so older hobie kayak can only use V1 drive. Thank you.
  6. Thank you very much for the reply. I hope it's not leaking. I plan to take it to some shallow water to test it. I can heat up a screw driver on my stove top( I don't have a torch) then try to melt the crack. Shall I remove the screw first before I fix the crack? The screw holds the rudder cable. As for the drive, I bought the whole thing for 450. Even if the drive fails in 2 years (I don't use the kayak often and I am gentle on my gears), I think it's still worth it. The cable looks OK , it's just the swage is rusty. Do you have some grease and lubricant to recommend for hobie drive? Thank you very much.
  7. Thank you very much for the reply. I will try that. What grease do you use? Also, what lubricant do you use? I have cal's grease and penn fishing reel grease. By the way, you said you saw many cables need to be adjusted , are they too tight or too loose usually? Thank you.
  8. I am thinking maybe i need to loosen the chain cable a little. Or I can use some abrasion resistant tape to wrap the metal chain , just top part, where it touches the cable.
  9. the crack is on the bottom , rear side of the hull. The line you see in the pic attached to the rudder. If it's not leaking, maybe I can just leave it the way it is? Thank you.
  10. By the way, what can I do with the cable swage? The rusted one, if i can't fix it, can I at least slow down its deterioration? Thank you. I have never owned a hobie kayak before.
  11. 450, what do you think? these days, everybody wants to buy used hobie it seems. It is the seller's market I feel like.
  12. Thank you very much. This is a really old drive. I don't think the parts are still available. There is a hatch right behind the seat. As for the screw, I am very new to this, I don't know what it does, there is rudder line tied to the screw, looks like. Also, the drive's left and right part can slide along the rod, I'm not going to say freely ,but fairly easy. In the attached pic, which is NOT the drive i have now,it's just for demonstration. 2 and 3 can slide along the rod 1 easily. They can be pushed toward each other to get close or pulled apart to some degree along the rod.
  13. Hi everybody, I hope you are having a great day. I bought a used hobie kayak, old one. It has 2 problems. 1 is the drive : the chain scratches the cable when pedaling. 2 is the hull. there is a crack. right above the screw. I haven't tested it yet. But the price was really good so I bought it. One pic of the drive shows the damaged cable because of scratching (hard to see from the angle, but it does scratch the cable). The other shows the position when the scratch happens. How to fix these 2 problems? Thank you very much.
