My apologies for the confusion- when I referenced Chatham I mean the rips to the south and east of Chatham. That would be important as the flats fishing is certainly more site cast oriented. The rip fishing seems like an easier place to start with a fly reel.

If casting does not need to happen even better…..I envisioned what some people mentioned here- drifting line into the front of the rips and controlling the location of the fly.

Seals have made it all the way up the bass river in Dennis/Yarmouth. I live on grand cove and see 2 of them enjoying the resources in the cove. I wonder how much destruction they are doing.

Nice work! Got me itching to get out there!

Thank you for the website input! Yea it just seems like more of an art form and more sustainable as the aches and pains kick up. I am always intrigued by the fly guys out there and it just looks like so much fun….oh and I love new gear so it can’t hurt!

Seems like some form of casting lessons is needed for this to be enjoyable- thank you!

Don’t worry everyone! Planning on get some some guidance on casting before heading out to the rips to try. I have been fishing the rips with “conventional” gear for a while and understand with the changing water conditions even casting a spinning rod can get challenging.

Looking to venture into fly fishing off the boat in Chatham but don’t know where to start- any recommendations on what size reel and rod? I would be casting and letting the fly drift into the rips. TIA!

Pair trawlers ruin all the fun. The second you see them you know you’re spot has gotten the ultimate burn. I hope people can be reasonable when looking at where this is going on.

Looking to venture into the fly world but am completely lost- what’s my best bet at a fly rod and reel for schoolie stripers off a boat?
