  1. Switching gears slightly here, but it's the same problem-same topic. Longtime friend lives in suburban Philly neighborhood with a small pond circled by homes. The pond is loaded with panfish, carp and catfish and on any given day you'll see kids of all ages, sizes and colors rod in hand. As you might guess, a group of men and women with ancestry from another part of the globe attack the pond with fishing rods and 5 gallon buckets. They were keeping EVERYTHING they caught. None had fishing licenses. Alerted, my friend approaches them alone and asked them to practice catch and release so the kids could continue to enjoy the pond. A minimal request, I thought. He didn't ask them to leave or stop fishing, just be a little considerate. Nope, that wasn't good enough for them. Up to this point he had been polite and respectful. Oh boy, the rules changed real fast. Any two of those guys standing on each other's shoulders would come up to Joe's chin. And when he raises his voice and tells you to leave the premises you're gonna leave quickly. Wrong tactic, vigilantism, why didn't he call a warden you say. We all know Fish and Game in just about every state is completely understaffed and can't possibly respond in a timely manner. I'm not saying what he did was right or wrong but what I am saying is people are frustrated with inaction by the authorities in dealing with lawbreakers and unfortunately are taking matters into their own hands. Just sayin'. By the way, the illegal fishermen have not returned.
  2. I'd be thrilled to hold a rifle with a stock that nice not to mention own or fire it ! Every time I'm paging thru a gun publication and see beautiful wood and blued steel I pause and savor the moment. I know they keep costs down but Circassian plastic, no-rustium and boring borium finishes have diminished a true art form most of us couldn't afford and only dream about.
  3. Fantastic !!! High fives all around. One little tidbit if I may...don't become discouraged if your rifle has feeding problems. M1 carbines are notorious for being picky feeders, mostly preferring one magazine over another. This includes new rifles, new magazines. Hope this isn't your case but if it does happen shop around for different mags and you'll find a winner and you won't want to put that little carbine down. They are that much fun to shoot!
  4. I used to be a Bruce Springsteen fan. I bought his records. I spent good money to see four of his concerts. A poet, a troubadour, I thought. Let’s not lie, some of his earlier material was as good as it gets. And then somewhere along his road to fame he tripped over a “woke” epiphany and should have just shut up and sang like so many other entertainers. But his soapbox is bigger than yours and mine so he was assigned instant credibility. I will not be lectured about “unity” and “the middle” by someone who spews verbal diarrhea as hateful and divisive as any of the Hollywood and entertainment industry people we see and hear today. The words “hypocrit” and “phony” come to mind. At face value Springsteen may appear as a champion to salt of the earth working class men and women. “Born in the USA”, - wave the flag, red white and blue for everybody, right ? In fact it is a mocking, satirical shot at the trials and failures of life in Smalltown USA (Freehold, maybe ?) with a veiled swipe at our military involvement in SE Asia. I am a veteran and, to be honest, I didn’t see anything wrong with that part of the song. Many of his newer songs are condescending toward everyman and show an underlying distrust of just about everybody. Try “We Take Care of Our Own”. It’s basically telling you “America was never great” set to music. Cuomo should have sung it. How about his faux farm ? A ludicrous tax break for a farm that exists only on paper in the assessor’s office. Those codes may be changed soon. Slap in the face to real farmers who work the land to make a living. Nice touch for the little guy, right Bruce ? To address the DUI - I would never make light of this situation. I know how destructive it is. I was merely stating the facts as released by the authorities. Since it happened on federal property it could be a little stickier. Bruce Springsteen’s music hasn’t been relevant for a while. His asinine political comments have kept him marginally in the news. He’s in the news again, albeit for the wrong reason. I am no longer a Bruce Springsteen fan.

  6. Uh oh. Sounds like Old McSpringsteen is in hot water for a Nov. 14 incident at Sandy Hook. Law enforcement sources reported Wednesday that Springsteen was arrested on Nov. 14 in his home state of New Jersey, at the Gateway National Recreation Area in Sandy Hook. He was cited for driving under the influence, reckless driving and consuming alcohol in a closed area. Wonder if he had the top up on his Jeep.
  7. Remember it like it was yesterday....daytime blues trip on the Thumper out of Barnegat Light. Beautiful day, we're catching fish, having a great time. My buddy borrows my knife from a leather sheath on my belt. He returns it but(t) replaces it with too much angle, slices through the sheath right into my butt. I called for the mate and being way too optimistic asked him for a band-aid. He says, "what, ya cut ya finga or sumptin" ? I showed him the slice and he goes ballistic and runs topside for the skipper. Captain comes down, takes a look, goes ballistic and runs for the radio to call CG. Coast Guard comes out in one of their brand new high speed skiffs, loads me up and away we go. Lights and siren through the inlet at 212 mph, boats scattering like bowling pins. I'm thinking, "I'm going to die. Not from the cut, but from the biggest maritime collision since the Andrea Doria". Ambulance waiting at the dock, took me to the hospital on the mainland. The ER nurses had a good chuckle. Me, not so much. It was a nice little incision - 12 stitches worth. From that day, I have never again carried a fixed blade knife - folders only.
  8. Goldy..... Love the video. I could watch surfing footage, especially big wave stuff (Mavericks, Jaws, North Shore ,etc.) all day long. Do you know the name of the group/song on the soundtrack ? Thanks.
  9. Switching on the "WayBack Machine". I'll be using a vintage Marlin 336 in .32 Win. Spl. It wears a Leupold compact 4x. Perfect for PA mountain laurel thickets and swamp edges. It is just as perfect today as it was 60 years ago when I got my first deer with that very same rifle. I keep thinking about modern day calibers and how much of a dinosaur it is but then how many deer have been killed with this round and the .30-30 (very similar ballistics). Plenty. A very good chance this will be my last rodeo so I'm just trying to close the circle. Wish me luck.
  10. I was given this advice by a friend who works in claims division of an insurance company...Don't let fire rating be the determining factor in your purchase. Even in the worst of house fires the temperature will spike and when the fuel is exhausted the temp will drop. Not recommending a "cheapo" safe but don't pay a whole lot extra for an extra fifteen minutes at a certain temp. Hope you never have to find out. Good luck.
  11. A very nice gesture on your part, LeeSHF. I'm sure I don't have to tell you how difficult it is to dislodge the video game controller from most kid's fingers these days and get them to show interest in outdoor activities like hunting and fishing. Anyway, I'm a newcomer to this website. This is my very first post and there is nothing I like more than reading and writing about fly fishing, especially with kids involved. It brings me back to the times I spent with my dad, fly rod in hand. He had a little tradition that I thought was pretty cool. Anytime he saw a youngster who was fly fishing, he would give that kid a fly. It might be a fancy-schmansy Wulff or a simple caddis. He's gone now but I try to keep it going. Thought you might like to hear that story and pass it along to your nephew. Best wishes and tight lines !
