  1. Point taken. None of what I said about the less than 30 somethings (or what you said about older gentlemen) are hard and fast rules that hold true across the board. You very well may have been one of many younger people I have met, talked with and even fished an evening with over the years I've been surf fishing. I've met plenty of classy, younger surf casters who have come up the right way. I speak here in generalities and majorities.
  2. The less than 30 somethings like their cell phones, are addicted to their cell phones (like pretty much all of that age group) and use their cell phones and social media to alert others to join in. It doesn't help that they see surf fishing as a social activity. I see it as a solitary activity and always have. This trend will not be stopped, so anyone with a fraction of what I have in me has only one recourse, change. I will not be fishing in those crowds. I'd rather fish a bad wind with a slim chance of catching than fish in the crowd. If you feel you have the right to fish wherever and whenever you want (which you do) and choose to fish in those crowds, just be prepared with thick skin.
  3. If ya don't know by now cell phones are used for more bad than good, idk what to tell ya. I try to not worry so much about what others are doing and worry about what I do. The way I handle crowds is I don't go near em as a rule, if I must though, I seek out the end of the line. 99x out of 100 I fish alone and I catch. That's the way it's always been and will continue for me. That's why no one here knows me, but I know people here. SOL has always done an incredible job and has their heart in the right place. These days however, some people don't get it and are heartless. Sorry for the rant. Oh yeah, report...fish are freaking everywhere this year, go catch !
  4. Met Joe Baggs at surf day and had questions for him about his lures. I used the smaller one last year for the first time with success. It is similar to the yo zuri mag darter but different. It sinks and has nearly neutral buoyancy but doest swim deep. The 7" floats, which i personally like. Both cast a little better than mag darters which means they cast like rockets. I like these lures and they'll get a lot of use this year from me.
  5. In keeping with the thread, the permit goes on sale March 1, on line only. Usually $55 on line. As an addition to this thread, and this is not a knock on the park rangers, I know several by name and I think they do an excellent job. That being said, I believe there is a "regular thing" going on in several of the lots after dark. That "thing" I'm referring to is drug use and sales. Last year I saw more needles in bathrooms and suspicious looking individuals sitting in their vehicles after dark than I've ever seen before. I would like to see something done about that.
  6. Spent a lot of time on rocks all over the tri-state area in 80's, 90's and 2000's and it is a dangerous game. I'll quote Clint, "Man's got to know his limitations". I don't do rocks anymore now, too dangerous for me, personally. I like to think by now I can find em from the sand and I truly enjoy the challenge. I always had one thought in mind when I did fish the jetties, "you have to respect the rocks". That means do it right or don't do it at all. Same goes for kayak which I know I'll never do, I love the surf too much.
  7. Happy New Year! Report! 1st keeper of the year. 30 inches and 9 shorts released additionally. OC, white plugs. Left em biting. Fish had 100% empty stomach but I suspect sand eels. Night bite, outgoing. Back at it tonight. Boomchockalocka!
  8. Humbled yet again by the mighty striped bass. My "plan" had a fatal flaw, I assumed there would at least be small fish again at my spot. Nope! Skunked, a few light hits and nothing else. How can you not be romantic and in awe about surf fishing! It baffles and befuddles on a regular basis and I'm always surprised when it happens. You would think I would expect it and understand it better after so many years.
  9. 19 fish last night in OC, 20" to 27". Got a plan to try and cull out a bigger one tonight, they're in there but hard to get at with all the smaller fish going nuts, we'll see. White plugs are a weapon of bass destruction right now. Definitely not over but getting colder fast and this could move things along and drop water temps a bit quicker.
  10. Last night, So. OC, got a dozen to 31". Had to work for em, 4 hrs but productive night on small plugs, only 1 on teaser. Back at it tonight.
  11. On the sand in MOCO last night. No bass, not a touch but the area i was in was choked with mini peanuts and spearing. We'll be catching into January just like last year barring any sustained snow events. Disclaimer, only for the hardy who come dressed for the occasion and don't mind a little ice build up on the braid.
  12. I don't call em, I call em after cuz I'm catching fish and don't wanna be on the phone. IMHO, not a spot burn bcuz spot burn is mentioning a spot on line. You're just guilty of what a lot of people are, internet infiltration. It's a cancer IMO (and not just with fishing).
  13. Gotcha, I believe you are correct. I just know that way back when, I was deciding which knot I would call mine. I investigated knot strength and which ones stated that they provide 100% knot strength. The Jansik and a few others all claimed 100%. I'm sure what you say is technically true that there is no knot that can attain 100% knot strength when you take into account the mechanics of the knot itself.
  14. Got caught up in MOCO blitz yesterday. Stayed put and didn't chase too hard. All nice fish, around 10 to 15lbs, some bigger. 10+ for me but I put in some time yesterday from noon til dark. Lotta peanuts.
  15. Life lesson, wise words. I've been trying to make a conscious effort to do this. Nuff said.
  16. This is a great thread. If you surf fish then I believe one of the many benefits is stargazing which I have done many times. On long nights in the surf, sometimes I would even lay back, stop fishing and take it in. Even cloudy nights I've marveled how some nights are so inky black that it's difficult to see your outstretched hand in front of your face. I've seen many shooting stars and many things I can't explain. I'm sure some of those things were satellites but do we really know? Do do do do...do do do do... (that's the Twilight Zone theme there, lol.)
  17. Love the last revelation, that is hilarious and has made me laugh to myself also when I see it!
  18. Yesterday driving to my spot saw about 20 to 30 guys jammed together (behaving as someone posted early). For me, no thank you and a no brainer, drove away from that and bailed fish 32" to 36" til dark with only 2 other surfcasters in site. I can't understand why anyone would add to a pile of surfcasters. I'd rather get casting practice, but that's me. Back at it tonight, we'll see.
  19. Good night last night, MOCO in back. Cookie cutter bass, all 30" - 32" and fat.
  20. My knot for braid for 30 years has been and will continue to be the Jansik Special. Has never failed me. When tied properly it has 100% knot strength.
  21. MOCO front last 3 nights. Water has cooled considerably and the fish responded. 24" - 35". Lost a few large and one straightened my 4x treble. Black plugs fished high in the water column, late outgoing. Slot is getting a little late cuz I gotta wake up at 5am for work. Gonna echo JimK's light issue. I purposely cast over this idiot last night so I could tell him you will catch more fish if you turn your back to the water when you use your light. I'LL SAY IT AGAIN (AND YES, I'M SCREAMING!!!) TURN YOU'RE FREAKING BACK TO THE WATER WHEN YOU USE YOUR HEADLAMP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I don't know why I even try cuz idiots nowadays do not fu..ing get it. Pisses me off severely!
  22. Been this way (not that) for me in Raritan Bay for fluke (surf, not boat) for the past several years. Every September I know where to find them. This year larger than usual though.
  23. Ok, I'm glad we now have documentation to CYA. Don't know u Chum but I know you've been here a while and a good guy. In this world crazy sh** happens.
  24. Catching last 5 trips on plugs (not bugs) nomoco, dark, late and outfront. All 30" to 35". Fish are there if you wanna lose sleep. Seems like a natural part of the game this time of year and through the summer if you wanna catch stripers. Helps when you live near the surf like I do which wasn't the case for a lot of my surf fishing life, so I empathize for those who travel distances.
