  1. Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I was hoping to save someone else the sticker shock. I had assumed it would be $30 to service the reel since it is on the low end of the the reels Daiwa makes. Knowing that it's $60 I would have gone to a local shop, and that would also probably have pushed me to get the standard BG instead of the MQ. The guy I take my Penn reels to (John Burch in Westerly RI, the best) only fixes Penns. John and his sons also build beautiful rods as "B Brothers". If you're in the area, check them out.
  2. @Jig it It could be me, but I was not having this issue with the reel last year (or with the prior Daiwa BG 3500, or with the various Penns I had previous to the Daiwas).
  3. My bad. The Daiwa rep said " the 60$ flat rate will be charged to most of our MQ body and Magsealed reels due to the parts inside of them. The 30$ would be any of our regular LT reels or basic reels without the magsealed or MQ body finish." Not sure what "most" means. He didn't specify which MQ reels would not get the $60 flat rate fee.
  4. Second season using this reel, this year the bail is occasionally snapping closed midcast. Not every time, but enough times to cost me some lures. I sent it in to Daiwa for service, and they are asking for $60 as a "performance spinning reel" instead of the $30 for the regular spinning reel. They tell me it's because of the magseal, too bad I couldn't locate that information before I mailed it to them. Now I'm trying to decide if I should pony up the $60 or tell them to mail it back and just remove the bail myself. Note that they recommend having the reel serviced annually. That will add up quickly. Or skip the service and buy a new one every 3 1/2 years. Or buy a different reel. I'm back to using my trusty 704. I'm getting a workout, but hey, it's dependable. Now I need to figure out how to cover the chips on the spool edge as I'm sure it is abrading the line and also costing me some distance.
  5. SwimBait, you do know that blue states such as CT, MA, NJ and NY are propping up red ones? Google how much states send to the feds and how much they get back in return. Or here, I'll save you the trouble: https://rockinst.org/wp-content/uploads/2020/01/1-22-20-Balance-of-Payments.pdf I'm as anxious as the next person to get fishing again. These photos and reports are just whetting my appetite. Still in quarantine though, for a mild case of the Rona
  6. I got my husband to go fishing with me by catching a hell of a lot more fish at daybreak than he was getting in the afternoon/evening. He's still not much of a morning person. The downside of him coming with me is that I lose a good half hour of prime fishing time because he doesn't like to leave the house before first light, and he requires coffee and food before he'll get in the car. That and he has been known to cast in front of me (and we're still together, can you imagine). He caught his first bonito before I did, by a year.
