  1. Thank you for the responses. I may have to look around for a penn 710 reel. I like the fact that there is a lot of good vintage stuff still circulating, and made in the USA. For now though i put 20# mono on the 704z.
  2. I wanted to get another rod/ reel for surf fishing in New Jersey this October. Then i got it in my head that i wanted to try using vintage gear, so i purchased a Penn 704z for a decint price. I have been looking for a rod that would work with this reel. Well today i picked up an 8' Roddy Roddymatic 902n rod at a local flee market for $15. Rod is in really good shape. Rod seems to have medium to slow action. So the first question is will this setup work? If so, what line can i put on it... 20#, 30# mono, fireline? Is a braided line gonna work?
  3. Here is the progress on the lure i started. Made a jig for the through wire. Made a pattern and cut out 3 blanks. Got as far as cutting all 3 blanks in half to hollow out the inside for the through wire and weights. I'll post updates as i progress.
  4. Can i get in on this? I'm new to the site and a fairly new to surf fishing, but would like to try making a couple. I do have some carvng tools, but may have to check on the raw materials. Is there a pattern to follow?
