  1. how is the frontier x in terms of turning big fish? Does it have enough backbone for that? Thank you for your input
  2. Thank you for the great post man. I feel like I definitely need a rod that can compliment the jigster. My friend has the surfmachine elite 11’3 1-6 and he says it’s great for topwater plugging. Do you have any knowledge on the ODM frontier 11’6 2-6 oz. If so, can you compare that rod to the surfmachine elite? Thank you - Vinh
  3. so I have it narrowed down to 2 rods. a black hole heavy surf II 11’ (or 10’) or a surfmachine elite 12’ 2-8. If i was to get the black hole, I would use that as my dedicated jigging rod and have my jigster be my all around / plugging rod. If i was to go with the surfmachine elite, I would use that as my plugging rod and have my jigster be my dedicated jigging rod. Thoughts? I believe you have both of the rods mentioned so you could give me so great insight on both rods. Thanks in advance
  4. i’m assuming the 11 would have a casting advantage but the 10’6 weighs less. Most guys prefer shorter rods for jigging, less rod to move. If you are using the jigster just for jigging and nothing else, I would go with the 10’6. Might as well get the extreme (5-12) at that point too if you are just jigging.
  5. Thank you Lou! yes, It’s a great rod. Love the rod because it is so versatile. I went with the 4-10 oz 11’. my friend (left in the picture, to the right of me) is actually using a 12’ century surf machine elite 2-8 and he loves his rod also. he is the one that got me into rod building this past winter. -Vinh
  6. okay sorry for that. i’m fairly new to this forum and didn’t know that was frowned upon. won’t happen again. I deleted the pic from my post but it still appears on other people’s quoted comments. then again, that specific spot seems like the whole world, their grandmother, and great grandmothers know about. packed from shoulder to shoulder. i feel like everyone who fishes the canal who is new or experienced knows that specific spot.
  7. Hello Dan, yes this rod will be primarily to fish the canal with! I mainly use my jigster for jigging or throwing those heavy plugs that are atleast 4.5 oz (from magic swimmers to 4.75 oz outcast lures or 4.5 oz plug lab grenades). This new rod that I want to build will be similar in a way that it can do it all like the jigster, but throw lighter lures just a little more efficiently, but I still want it to be strong enough to pull any fish during any moon phases or tides. A few of my friends have the surfmachine elite 11’3” 1-6 while another one has a 12’ 2-8 oz. The one in the photo to the left of me has the 12’. I think the 1-6 is too light for my own taste. How is the 12’? Is the 12’ more of a do it all rod like the jigster but can throw lures in the 3 oz range more efficiently? I am always throwing lures from 3 oz to max 6 oz, but I want a rod with strong backbone. Is the 12’ century a moderate rod? And how is the casting on it? My friends love the surf machine elite but I want to also hear your opinion on it since you are very knowledgable with so many other canal rods. I should also ask how is the black hole 10’ rod that you are using? I am looking deeply at that also. If i was to get a black hole dedicated to just jigging, I would get an 11’ instead. Do you think the 3-10 oz of the black hole feels a lot stronger and has a lot more backbone than the jigster 4-10 oz? Thank you in advance man, really appreciate all the help and info. I just started making my own rods this winter so I am still fairly new to the scene in terms of rodbuilding and which canal blanks are the best.
  8. hey Dan, I’ve seen a lot of your youtube videos and I actually commented on one of your videos asking how the jigster is. You gave it nothing but positive reviews so I decided to build it this past winter. i’ve been using it this season and it’s been a great rod. i’ve seen you riding around a few times with the jigster in the back of your truck and I can tell it’s your rod because of the green wrapping on the guides. Can you recommend another rod for me to build? I recently started a forum asking for other rod recommendations to build. thank you in advance
  9. Hey guys, so I recently got into rod building this past winter. I built a ODM jigster 11’ 4-10 oz and I have been using it so far this season at the canal. I love the rod. very versatile rod but i love it especially for jigging. looking to build another rod that can do both jigging and top water. anyone have recommendations? i was looking at the Surfmachine elite 11’ 2-8 oz or a black hole just for jigging. I have attached some pictures of my jigster below.
  10. I bought Stella 5000 fj just recently. I saw that you posted a pic of it with an albie. how did it hold up against the albies? Smooth? Enough power?
