    SWA 10K or 14K

Thanks for the insight. I guess I would be willing to sacrifice some retrieve speed if that means cranking from deeper water will be easier. And with 65lb braided line I'm only losing 25 yards if I go with the 10k.
  3. I need help deciding between the two. I know each are designed for different types of fishing, but I don't want to drop the money for 2 gosas. I do offshore jigging in about 300-400 feet as well as plugging and dunking from shore in Hawaii. Would the benefit of having a lower gear ratio for deep jigging in the 10k outweigh the small disadvantage if I used it for plugging and dunking? 10k has 40" retrieve while 14k has 53". If you did all 3 types of fishing and could only choose one which would you take? I appreciate the help.
  4. I appreciate all the info. Thank you for the explainations! Decided to actually take it apart like the video and discovered there's only 1 shim under the bearing on the left side as opposed to 2 in the schematic. Is that an issue?
  5. That makes sense. I figured that's what it was for but since it's new to me I wasn't completely sure. Just out of curiousity though, what's the difference between Springer's issue and what I described? To me they sound completely identical in how the spool will rub against the frame if the tension knob is backed off and the reel is tilted down towards the handle side.
  6. I just tried this on the 40 I purchased a couple weeks ago and it's doing the exact same thing you described. I also noticed that the more I loosened the spool tension knob, the more I was able to move the spool left and right within the frame. Is that normal? This is my first conventional so I'm still familiarizing myself.
  7. Plum thank you for the follow up. You're right, even though its performance may be fine it will always be in the back of my mind knowing that mine doesn't sound like the majority. I know it sounds dumb but I prefer to have a consistent sound as it should. I went to a different store and all the BGs there were consistent. Based on my previous experience with the shop while making the purchase, I couldn't help but feel that they are only going to tell me to send it in through warranty. Of course that isn't what I want since that will mean being without it for 2-6 weeks when I haven't even fished with it yet.
  8. Thank you I appreciate it. They said the BGs were on sale from 119 to 99, not sure if they specifically meant that model. And when I asked if they had another in the 5000 size they said it was the only one they had. Will do this tonight. Just from pulling the line by hand going through the bottom eye of the rod it still felt pretty smooth. I simply can't over why it sounds like that when I have never experienced this with any other spinning reel I owned regardless what they cost. Will greasing it with any other brand other than daiwa void the warranty like penn?
  9. Does anyone else's BG drag clicker make two different sounds?
  10. From what I can remember I think it still felt pretty smooth. I'll have to play with it more once I get home from work
  11. A slight grinding. I feel it may be from the gear
  12. Here is the audio of what I'm talking a about. The three times I pulled the line were at a constant speed Bg5000 spool.m4a
  13. I agree the sound isn't as important. I just never had a reel that made two completely different sounds before so I was wondering if anyone else had a BG that does the same thing
  14. I understand it eventually happens but should it sound like that brand new out of the box?
  15. Hi everyone, new guy here. After searching online for awhile I still couldn't quite find the answer I'm looking for and I noticed many topics of the reel were on this forum so I wanted to try my luck. I purchased the BG5000 yesterday and while I was handling it I felt and heard the slightest grinding from the body. When I asked about it the employee stated that reels have a break in period and over time it will go away. I was a little skeptical due to reading and hearing about how smooth the BGs were so I played around with the 4500 and 6500 sizes and noticed the same thing so I figured that's the way it is. Will it eventually go away with use? Assuming of course that no water has made it's way inside. Secondly, I just realized tonight that the clicking sound from spinning the spool is not consistent at all regardless if I spin it by hand or pull the line with a loose drag setting. To be specific, in one full rotation, half the spool makes the sound you would expect. Crisp, clear, and metallic. Once it gets to the other half it sounds muffled, quiet, and plastic. As if the teeth(?) are not engaged all the way. It doesn't matter how fast or slow I pull the line either. From what I can see there doesn't seem to be anything wrong from underneath the spool and the grease looks evenly distributed. And on the shaft the spring and holder doesn't appear broken. Is this normal or am I just being paranoid?
