  1. I was there and saw it burning. It looked like it was made of plastic. It went up quick. I was on the opposite side of the loop driving around to head out of the camp ground. When I started driving the smoke from a distance looked like someone may have been burning a styrofoam cooler. In the 20 or so seconds it took for me to make it around the loop, it was a raging fire. RV was next to it as I was leaving. I must have seen five people run up with fire extinguishers only to realize it was way too late. I heard the same thing regarding the cause. I generator was under a tonneau and caught fire. It’s a shame about the cat. Luckily, no one else was hurt.
  2. Nice fish. I'm heading down Friday morning to fish all day Saturday. I hope fish like that stick around...
  3. I started heating with wood a few years back using an insert. I now have six chainsaws and quite a few splitting mauls. At the very least, it keeps me in good shape.
  4. I came down late yesterday and fished AI today. Nothing all morning so I went south of the bull pen. There was far more life at the second spot but still nada. We had a large group of pelicans diving just inside and beyond the bar. I managed a spot and a small bluefish on a Hopkins spoon. It felt like there were fish beyond the bar, but I was only able to get a few casts out there. I have a few conventional reels; an akios, daiwa bg, and a newly magged/CT converted old abu 7000 Long story short, I need to practice casting. I fished cut finger mullet, sand fleas, fish bites, and cut spot. Doesn’t matter what bait you have if you can’t get it to them. It was still a beautiful day to be on the beach. I’ll be back in late October, hopefully you guys save some fish for me.
  5. I’m supposed to head down on Monday with my nephews. I’ll have to keep an eye on the weather.
  6. So they have to be 1/2 mile from shore at Assateague, regardless off it’s MD or VA? I had no idea the NPS had that restriction.
  7. I’ve been laid up with a muscle spasm in my right shoulder so fishing has been tough. I did manage to go out last night and fish for an hour or so. I used fake blood worms and a top/bottom king rig with 3oz in close. I got many hits that I missed. I ended up catching a small king fish. The bite was decent. I was fishing the OC beach in the 80s (not that this is a spot to be burned). I fished from 10-11pm. I may make it down to AI tomorrow if the family and my shoulder are willing. If not, I’ll stay up here and fish when I can. I’ll be down to fish AI in September and October if nothing else. Good luck and tight lines.
  8. What snell knot are you using there? It looks so nice and compact.
  9. Here is the link for SSTs. https://marine.rutgers.edu/cool//sat_data/?product=sst&region=chess&nothumbs=0 Clouds during the time of the pic will show up as blank white spots, so you have to wait for a clear day to get a good idea of surface temps. Just remember, its fishing and fish swim. -e
  10. I learned after ordering from Mikes’s that ordering from Diawa is actually less expensive and ships faster. I think the extra cost from Mike’s is due to shipping from Canada.
  11. I fished the incoming tide this afternoon on AI. I used clam snouts and sand fleas. I managed to catch a handful of small stripers in close. The stripers hit better on the clam. I talked to a couple other folks, they reported dogfish and stripers, nothing big. It was a great way to spend the afternoon and the weather cooperated so I’m happy. Good luck out there and be safe.
  12. Gents, Thanks for the feedback. I really appreciate you sharing your knowledge. I always can catch fish from a boat, whether it be in the Chesapeake or offshore, surf fishing is a different story. Oddly enough I enjoy surf fishing the most. I did fish the edge of the plumes as they receded back out. I fished a mix of sand fleas and clam snouts on circle hooks from 6/0 on up. I ended up catching a handful of small stripers, the biggest being 16”. I had some bigger baits out further near the bar and in what appeared to be a break in the bar, nothing on those baits. No black drum, but for me it was a good day. I’ll be back next month. The fishing will be different, but I’ll be better prepared. Thank you!
  13. I have a window this afternoon to go down to AI. It looks like I'll be able to catch the incoming. When you say "cast short just at the edge of the first break", do you mean where the water mixes behind the shore break or the water mix just inside of the bar? I'm assuming the closer, but I wanted to ask and will plan on fishing both. If anyone wants to know where the fish aren't today, ask here or avoid the silver tacoma with a camper top on it. Thanks, -e
  14. I have an Orca 56 qt, made in the USA with a lifetime warranty. I've had it for two years and it keeps ice for sure, but it is bulky. At the time I bought it, I think it was around $100 cheaper than the equivalent yeti. I don't necessarily regret buying it; however, If I had to do it over i would have went for something cheaper as I really only need to keep ice for a weekend not 6 days. There is a decent site for outdoor gear reviews and they have a cooler review, just google outdoor gear lab.
  15. I usually camp. Before I had kids, I would drive from Baltimore to OCMD with a group of guys to fish offshore for the day and come back. It was a midnight to midnight thing. It's not bad if you have a few people to take driving and napping shifts. I think we actually made a few trips to fish out of Hattaras inlet like that. They we a little longer than 24 hours, but we still made it through without having to shell out money for a hotel.
  16. No doubt... In my book, that would be a great day. Nice catch..
  17. Good stuff. Thanks to everyone for posting.
  18. I fished Thursday and Friday. Three sharks, two croaker, and one bluefish. I would have been psyched to get covered up with blues. I made the mistake of settling on frozen mullet for bait. I’ll know better next time.
  19. Oh man... I’m heading down on Thursday morning. I hope there are some reds sticking around. Nice fish!
  20. I fished AI yesterday afternoon for a few hours. Nothing serious, just some time while the family shopped. I managed a handful of blues in the 10-15” range and a lone small kingfish. The biting flys were terrible, and the beach was packed. I’ll probably head back down this week, I’ll shoot to get An early start. Good luck and be safe.
  21. I hit the upper bay on Friday. I launched out of Rocky Point between Back and Middle river and went south. The wind was fighting the current, so drifts were tough and the forecasted 5-10 out of the south was more 10-20. I managed one striper close to keeper size and a bunch smaller at 7' knoll. Tough fishing, but better than a day at work. Good luck out there.
  22. I was practicing my google-fu the other day looking for some tide resources and came across this site for NOAA Current Predictions. Typically, I look at a tide chart, see high and low tides, and do a mental exercise to guess what time will provide the longest period of fishing before the current goes slack for a particular area. If I'm fishing a lot, I'll be better at figuring this out. Due to tides affecting currents differently at different locations, I won't be very good if on figuring the out for a location i'm not familiar with. The link below provides current predictions for different spots in the bay to take some of the guess work out of it. Some locations will just show the time of slack and peak currents and speeds. Some sites provide predictions for current, speed, in or out, in six minute intervals - these are the sites listed with "harmonic" predictions. Here is a list of sites where current is reported for the bay: https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaacurrents/Stations?g=455 Here is the link to Baltimore Harbor Approach (off Sandy Point) (ACT4996) with six minute intervals - see the text to the right. https://tidesandcurrents.noaa.gov/noaacurrents/Predictions?id=ACT4996_1&d=2020-06-15&r=1&t=am%2Fpm&u=1&tz=LST%2FLDT&i=6min&threshold=leEq&thresholdvalue= I've yet to take this data and go out to get a feel for the accuracy. I'm guessing, like tides, wind will have an affect. Nonetheless, it's more data that can help with catching.
  23. I camped with the kids at AISP over the weekend. Too much going on to hit the OSV, but I did manage to fish for around 90 minutes in Saturday. I went onto the beach around 530p and managed small bluefish and a kingfish. I was fishing with frozen finger mullet and fake blood worms. There was a guy just south of us on the beach that was reeling in one king after another. It was windy, but still fishable. Definitely better than being at work. Thanks!
  24. I went out Monday, mainly just to run the boat. I invited my neighbor's son to come along as I learned recently he likes to fish. I did my best I to set expectations low as I haven't fished much since having kids 15 years ago. I'm also out of touch with the feeding pattern of the fish in the bay as this was my first fishing trip out this year. We launched just off of the Gunpowder and made our way south to a "knoll", I was thinking structure and current. There were a couple of boat anchored up on the north and east side, so I tried a few drifts on the west side casting jigs - nada. Another boat showed up a few minutes after we arrived so we picked up our lines and went south to fish a "bridge". Found some structure with good outgoing current and managed to pick up a few stripers. Below was the biggest. I was quick to unhook, get a photo, and release, so I didn't measure, but it was a solid mid 20s" fish. The fish didn't start hitting until we switched from opening night to chartreuse colored bass assassins. All in all a great afternoon on the bay; especially considering my expectations. Good luck!
