  1. @Linesideslayer , maybe let me know what you set up for @nycstripers16 I live in Santa Cruz, but would love a little more experience of the area. I usually fish the beaches between Watsonville and Seaside.
  2. Nice, I was out in Santa Cruz and there was *nuthin*
  3. Being able to service a reel myself is a big plus!
  4. Just got my first nice rod for surfcasting. It's rated for something like 2 oz total, and I think that is pretty common for a lot of the rods y'all have recommended here. And yet I see many people using rigs with pyramid or drop weights that are more than those two ounces. What am I missing? By how much is it safe to exceed that rating? Under what circumstances? Only weights? Or only lures? Only when throwing old pieces of fruitcake?
  5. I'd like to get in on one if someone has a slot. Newbie though...
  6. I just bought an Ugly stick Elite 9' medium as an upgrade from the inherited rods I had. I have a Shimano R4000 which will be in place until the next round of cash gets invested. I got this stuff to get set up for surf fishing and it is working so far. But sometimes I look at the nice wharves we have here in Santa Cruz and wonder about fishing off of them. I've been trying to do my reading on pier fishing, but am finding a lot of really crappy intro articles. Most articles start with "get yourself a good pier fishing cart." Can y'all compare and contrast the gear between surf fishing and pier fishing? Are these forums appropriate for pier questions or should I take them somewhere else that you can recommend to me?
  7. This is astute, and not something the experts take into account often enough.
  8. Does anybody ever also dig for clams while they are out their with their rod? I poked around a bit for Pismos the other day and found a lot... of little ones. So I am interested in the experince in the Bay Area.
  9. Hidey ho... also new. Fishing north and south from Santa Cruz.
  10. Dang dude. "Start" with a $180 reel and $229 rod?
  11. I am fortunate to be within about 10 min of the beach, further if you want it to be good fishing.
  12. I'm a complete newbie. So far I have only been using trout gear I had on hand. I can't jump in at the $300+ rig level and so I am shopping around for modest setups. Durability and all that is a top concern for me since I am new and will probably abuse things more than an experienced angler would. My question is this... do you really think that a $200 reel lasts 4 times longer than a $50 reel, or whatever other math and multipliers you can think of? Why not get $30-$50 reels and consider them kind of disposable?
  13. Okay, and even newer noob here... I kind of get what a 'bucktail' is, but I kind of don't. Nothing on the shelf really says 'bucktail' on it. What would the package say, and which types in general should I try for surf fishing the Monterey Bay? And... how do you fish with them? Totally fine if your answers are 'lmgtfy' or Youtube links.
  14. By the way, this was only my third time out surf fishing And the second time I lost the handle to a reel
  15. Last night I got a quite large (for me) barred serf perch, a teeny tiny one that took the hook too far, and a pretty good sized smelt (from the beach). My picture is terrible. I think the BSP was a hair over 12 in. I'll measure again when it goes in the fryer!
