It's all about application I don't use mono for everything and I don't use braid for everything. Mono I use for fishing porgy/seabass on headboats because of the stretch. Braid I use mostly for surf, fluke and black fishing. Fresh water I use braid for fishing heavy cover for bass. Not going to write a essay on it but there are benefits for using both.

Hi-Lo Hook size for North Shore LI Porgy
OverTheRailIntoThePail replied to ThrowinPlugs's topic in Main Forum
Any 1/0 bait holder. Baitholder helps to keep the clam on. Never caught porgy on gulp minnows but I have on the gulp bloodworm. -
I stumbled across his videos a few years back. The guy knows his stuff by using his technique I have drastically increased my hook ups. He's clearly influential in the product market. Tsunami classic rods MH were sold out. Quantum accurist reels definitely increased in sales. I don't use his combo, but the terminal tackle and rigs I use. I do modify the rigs a bit. As far as gulp I prefer the the swim jerkshad in nuclear chicken or the sand eel gulp in new penny.

7 foot is fine. When I'm inshore on boat fishing for fluke it's the same rod as when I'm fishing from beach. If I go into deeper water on boat I have a beefier 7foot that can work 3oz buck tails and up. It's got to be a fast drift and deep water for me to use a 3oz buck tail.

Picked up a rod at a garage sale for 15 bucks. (WMERCSBM70C1) its in great condition. Never used Wright & Mcgill/ Eagle claw rods. The model I have is designed to be a crankbait rod/heavy power. Working cranks in heavy cover. I was thinking about slapping an abu c3 on it and bucktailing fluke. Anybody have experience with these rods?

Why are you embarrassed about it? The penn pursuits are great low-cost reels. I own 3 of them. You take care of them they will be fine.

Why are Walmart and Amazon Rods/Reels so cheap?
OverTheRailIntoThePail replied to Kzhang31's topic in Main Forum
They can sell those products cheaper. I try to support local MAP stores when I can, especially tackle shops, but it is tough when I know I can get the same rods and reels from Amazon or Walmart cheaper. Along with a good warranty. MAP shops have to mark up their items to compete. For example one MAP shop I go to sells gulp for 8$ a pack. I can go on Amazon and buy gulp and get more for less and free shipping. One thing I love about MAP shops is you can haggle and make deals. -
Using "Trash Fish" as Bait for Blues and Bass?
OverTheRailIntoThePail replied to Recruitkim's topic in Main Forum
Sea robins are tasty. They are great in a fish chowder. Or seafood paella. -
Spros are great the hooks are just massive. Pick up some S&S bucktails, rattletails, hurricane bucktails aren't bad either. I going to try the flex-jig swing arm bucktail. There are great custom bucktails on eBay as well. The main thing with bucktails is keeping them off the bottom don't let them drag.
-
It's seems like you relied on your reel to winch that monster up. It's just not going to work. Loosen up that drag. Tighten it as needed. Upgrade to a 5000-6000 size. I have not have a problem with any on my battles.

Need baitcasting rod strength recommendation
OverTheRailIntoThePail replied to Jay in the Bay's topic in Main Forum
Take a look at the Tsunami casting rods they are great for inshore fishing. I have a couple different models. The TSCC-701MH sounds like it would be right up your alley. Medium-heavy power is different between rod brands. I use the heavy power model for heavier bucktails. I wouldn't use 12 pound mono your better off with 15-20 pound braid it has about the same line diameter. -
New to bucktail/teaser for fluke
OverTheRailIntoThePail replied to hurricane1091's topic in Main Forum
I have been using the dropper loop method for the last few seasons. I use 30# flourocarbon. For teasers I have some of those fluke candy teasers from jigging world or I'll use a glass minnow 12" above the bucktail. I have killed them will just a regular bait holder hook above the bucktail with a grub on it. I would stay away from too much terminal tackle (swivels and clips) it's just not needed. Keep it simple. I tie direct to braid. Going to try some of those rattletails and chrome spros this season. -
What should the fluke regulations be ?
OverTheRailIntoThePail replied to SurfCasterNJ's topic in Main Forum
Close it NY/NJ (charter, commercial, etc). Do the research and reap the harvest next season. 5 fish at 18". -
Same. Pink during a overcast nails them.

I keep breaking rods. What am I doing wrong?st
OverTheRailIntoThePail replied to M4rv's topic in Main Forum
Do you notice the rods breaking in the same place? It most likely is your casting. The way you load up the rod. 1.5 oz buck tail shouldn't break a rod with that lure rating. -
Look at their cast you will know a googan when you see one.

Penn Battle 2500 / 2000 spool replacement question
OverTheRailIntoThePail replied to 55555s's topic in Main Forum
You can just buy a another 2500 spool. I think they go for like $12 on tackle direct. The line capacity between the 2500 and the 2000 really is not significant jump. Untwist the drag and pop it on. I don't remember if there are washers put keep them in the same order. -

One of the best tasting fish out there. Scale them and gut them cook them whole in a foil packet with lemon, garlic, butter, herbs, salt, pepper. That's all you need to know.

Rod makes the difference or just luck or what?
OverTheRailIntoThePail replied to Fishin4Fun's topic in Main Forum
I have a 9ft ugly stik I bought from a flea market with 30# braid and a penn clash. My guess is you are pulling hooks. Try octopus hooks or circle hooks. Keep that line tight no slack. -
