  1. Both good recommendations, definitely going to try both. Low light/night fishing could be the issue on the first one, timing wise. Second I can try to catch lower.
  2. I have a 150 vsx spooled with 30 lb spider wire invisibraid. On the retrieve the first few cracks every once in a while the roller will miss the spool. I have the handle all the way in the bottom position on the cast. I catch the line on the retrieves with my middle finger and will miss the spool and line will wrap on top of the drag knob. The line lays level on the spool otherwise. Has anyone else had this issue? If so, Is there something I’m missing? thanks and tight lines
  3. What fly was he throwing ?
  4. I catch and release. Thanks man!
  5. I’m in. Catch release repeat
  6. I’m in. That’s a beauty.
  7. Max I like that analogy. I too have a hard time with bait and wait. Also love being on the move with plugging. Also want to catch more. I feel like I used to catch more with bait. But if it’s the fishery I can’t change my catch ratio. Valentine and others of course are thinking I’m looking for a hand out. Grumpy bastards. Anyway, I am thinking of approaching this year like a 4th grade science fair and changing my variables with plugs vs bait. Mill get back to the old grumpy salts with my conclusion. First hypothesis , bad reactions to my posts from here on. Cheers
  8. So last night my buddy and I were having a debate on fishing tactics. We were a little dispelled after a very slow fall fishery on the NJ beaches. But we were discussing what the best approach for targeting striped bass may be. We have both been fishing together since high school so about 15 years and have had some pretty good runs. Recently our production has slowed and are not totally sure if it’s us, the fishery or other factors. We grew up fishing LBI primarily with bait and chasing blues with tins and a small assortment of plugs. Over the years we have moved away from bait and switched over to plugs with the bait stick mostly staying at home but on the rare occasion still soaking some bunker. We fish up and down New Jersey and are wondering if our catch rate would increase if we switched back to bait ? We still have days/nights where we still crush fish but nothing like we used too. Is it dredging that has made our surf a desert? Has the bass population plummeted off the deep end ? We are still undecided on what approach to take into the new year but we will be fishing hard again like always. We discussed eeling , kayaks , back bays , tides, night vs day, and the list continues. The fishing this year was hot and cold again and we had no barometer of which method was outperforming the other since we didn’t observe anyone outperforming us at the same time with a different approach. Lets hear your thoughts Tight lines
  9. Can’t stop thinking about fishing. The itch is strong and it needs a scratching.
  10. Who is your guide? dogwood is a winner in my opinion. If you’re going alone , you can hang with everyone after fishing all day and drink some booze and relax.
  11. I have stayed at dogwood. Great time , good food, all you can drink and you’re staying on the water. If if you’re going out of hopedale I would definitely stay there. You get a nice state room and friendly service. *But, if you’re fishing further south... SALTGRASS this place is hands down the best fishing lodge I’ve been to. Maybe even the better stay I have had. Beautiful plantation on the Mississippi and a personal chef with some serious skills. I booked my stay with them without knowing they were a charter service. I fished with Cajun fishing adventures but this place is an A+ , can’t speak for their guiding but everything else was excellent.
  12. I have switched to Stocking foot since I wear a size 15 and the only boot foots I have are for hunting and neoprene. I like being able to stud my boots for the stocking foot waders. Only issue is the sand intrusion on the front beach. Maybe this would be best for a separate thread but what I have been using is a gravel guard from Simms that Velcros around my boot. Takes about 2/3 hours til i have to empty my boots Just read someone Uses duct tape to keep sand out. What are you guys using to keep the sand out? I’ll definitely try the tape method.
  13. I fly fish there. Don’t live here anymore but my parents do. I fish from shore and boat/kayak.
  14. Definitely fish at night and never see another fly angled out on the same stretch as me. I have mostly switched to a TH 7/8 Beulah opal. Will use a 8wt float or 9 intermediate. All depends on what’s happening. As far as keeper sized fish. I fish both jersey and the Chesapeake. So it varies on keeper size. I can usually catch a keeper on any given day in the Chesapeake. But the Surg is a different animal. I would say 1/2 keeper fish per season with plenty of shorts.
