  1. Does anyone surf or fly fish from Bowers Beach? How is the fishing?
  2. If you like deer hair checkout the Pat Cohen's Hot Butt Toad or Frog Legged Slider. If you like tying with deer hair these will keep you busy for a while.
  3. I spend a pretty fair amount of time in Fredericksburg. I have never been to Carl's, I will have to try it out. I have seen it noted as a landmark other places. Just took a ride up to the Confluence today to get out of the house and get my juices flowing. I don't to Friends of the Rappahannock so I can access the river there. Will be hitting the river in April for some striper and shad fishing at the fall line. Vacation these days is used for mid week fishing trips in an effort to miss the big crowds. Happy New Year all.
  4. I live near the Potomac River. Largemouth and smallmouth bass are not native to the river. Either are musky or walleye. So to say many of these fish are native is not true. Many trout were not native either. In any case for snakehead or any of the other fish mentioned these things happened because of man. After the snakehead population grew in the Potomac we witnessed an overall increase in largemouth bass size. Those snakehead have a lot of young fish that make for good eating for the bass. Concurrently over the past couple of years we have had a number of environmental issues that have hurt things on the river. Then add a known felon (catching and selling largemouth bass as a food source) to the river fishing commission and we now have dangerous to bass commercial fishing on the river. Sadly the issue is not the snakehead but the bass. The snakehead in the tidal Potomac seek out slow backwaters. I do not know how they would do in faster moving currents.
  5. Good choice if you are going to be doing surf launches. You need the length and speed. You are also right on about practicing. It is a good plan to do that anyhow but again surf launches add a little to the needed technique and ability. Practice without equipment in your kayak launching through the surf first. It will save you some money in the end. Congrats and have fun.
  6. Great video and ties Jabster. Nice flies everyone.
  7. Any olive body material you want for the body, use blue rubber bands for the legs. Google these two things 1)Sublett Blue Crap fly .... 2)Baby Blue Crab fly. You should find a tying video for each one.
  8. Although I am a big fan of Jackson kayaks I would say Kayak Kevin Whitley paddles all over the Chesapeake Bay in Ocean Kayak. If you don't know Kevin or his exploits Google him. That 13 foot Ocean Kayak would be a good boat too.
  9. If you want a boat for big open water take a look at the Jackson Kraken 13.5. Little more than $1,000 but a nice boat and will do what I believe you are looking for a kayak to do.
  10. It ought to wiggle like and eel. Go get'em!
  11. Susquehanna is a very big river so I don't know where you are talking about but as long as you watch the stream gauges there isn't any reason you cannot fish it using a kayak paddle. There are several kayak fishing guides that work the river on a regular basis. I would recommend wearing a flotation device because on any free flowing river you should be careful.
  12. Thanks, I noticed it was an old post. Thought I would reply since I think the Coosa is a great river kayak.
