  4. The American Saltwater Guides Association road show is coming to Huntington - Six Harbors Brewing - Wednesday, March 23rd @6:30. With the opening of striped bass season right around the corner this is an excellent opportunity to meet up with fellow anglers, talk fishing and striped bass fisheries management. The link to register is located in the image below. Space is limited so act fast.
  5. I certainly understand your frustration. This new Amendment will determine how striped bass will be managed going forward. There are options under consideration that will compel the Management Board to act faster and more decisively when the science indicates that the fishery is in trouble. These options are a good thing and should result in a more abundant fishery. Other options, if selected, will permit the Board to delay action or take no action at all. This is why this is such an important period in striped bass fisheries management and why it is so important for the public to make their voices heard. Believe it or not, during the past few ASMFC Board meetings there has been some momentum building for more conservative, timely action on the part of the Board. That momentum could be lost if the Board members find that the public is no longer engaged or interested. Don't give up hope. Write your letters. Show up at your local meetings. Support options that compel the Board to act decisively and act quickly. Ross
  6. Not sure how this is impacted by the State Police however you can expect online sales to continue for the forseeable future as this is being pushed up in Albany and not by LI State Parks headquarters. We are going to make a push to have the Caumsett permit be a combination of online and in-person sales as the current system is just not working...we shall see if we are successful.
  7. I do not believe that this is true. Over the past several Management Board actions, the commercial sector has also seen reductions in their quotas when the rec sector faced cutbacks. The commercial sector is managed under a quota system and just as the rec sector has dead discards calculated, the same is true for the commercial sector. It is true that the options under consideration with Draft Amendment 7 are primarily focused on the rec sector. I believe that there is a motion pending with the Board that would allow states to share their commercial quotas that may be addressed at the next meeting in May.
  8. It was recently announced that the State Park Police will remain a separate entity and will not be merged with the State Police as former Governor Cuomo had proposed. Also, there will be a change with the Park Rangers as they will now be under the direction of the NY State Parks Department. Expect to see more Park Rangers monitoring some of the 4x4 entrances this year. Ross
  9. The ASMFC will be holding a public comment meeting on Wednesday March 16th from 6-8 pm at the DEC Division of Marine Resources, located at 123 Kings Park Blvd, Kings Park, NY (in the Nissequogue River State Park). The meeting will also be livestreamed: Click here to join livestream of the meeting or call 518-549-0500 and enter Access Code 161 360 1131. The ASMFC is seeking the public's input on Draft Amendment 7. Amendment 7 will determine the rules and process for how the striped bass fishery is managed. There are a wide number of options under consideration. Some options provide the management board with flexibility and discretion in how they manage the fishery. Others provide firm direction on how and when the Board will act when certain management triggers are tripped. The Draft Amendment is a very dense document. The ASMFC has provided a video that helps to describe the various options that are under consideration. You can find that video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tjUw92-Xl-4. Hope to see you there. Ross Squire President, New York Coalition for Recreational Fishing
  10. Interesting to see what the inlets looked like years ago...
  11. This work is part of the Fire Island Inlet to Montauk Point, NY Reformulation Study. You can see the info on the project in the Appendix section of the report which I have attached. "To create early successional habitat that provides nesting and foraging for shorebirds, plans call for regrading and devegetating proposed habitat. Foraging habitat encompasses the area between the LAT and the highest astronomical tide (HAT), while nesting habitat extends from the HAT to an elevation of +8.33 ft-NAVD88 (+9.5 ft-NGVD29). Habitat is proposed on the north and south sides of the Point with a berm spanning the interior portion at a maximum elevation of +8.3 ft-NAVD88. Modifications are not proposed along the western side of the project due to the migrating sand spit. Fill will be placed in the vicinity of the wetland and tidal pond area to improve the productivity and funtionality of the wetland. Through the proposed activities at Democrat Point, early successional habitat will be created." Ross ICPFs.pdf
  12. If I have 6 beers and walk to a jetty to fish, there is little chance I am coming back to the car. RS
  13. I have never seen as much garbage and debris on the beaches as this year. I have been trying to come up with some actions that can be taken to have people better appreciate their surroundings. Having more garbage cans available could help. Signs instructing people to clean up after themselves written in as many languages as necessary, establishing a Friends of the Beach program where the public can help to monitor the beaches, better enforcement, making participation in a beach clean-up a requirement for getting a fishing parking permit. All these could hep - the danger that I see is in having the people that run these parks throw their hands-up in defeat. Any other ideas?? Ross
  14. Rocky Shores Tackle - add the dot com and you can see what they have to offer. The rinds have held up pretty well. RS
