  1. Yes there are 5 rings meaning that it is 5 years old. The 6 ring is forming that is why i said 5 years old going on 6years.
  2. It really depends on the habitat of the fish and how healthy the water system is. I have caught a 32in inpoundment rockfish that was 5 years going to 6 years. This is the otolith of the 32in striped bass i caught
  3. The fish depends on what I am fishing. Striper 5-20lb, cannel catfish 8-15lb, Flathead catfish 15-30lb on running water (current)
  4. I get wat yall are saying but braid and dam fishing dont really go well together where im fishing. Im talking about getting hung up over 3 times and rerigging every other 30min
  5. True I do like braid but how im fishing braid is not good. Dam fishing is different type of fishing
  6. im fishing dams and it is very rocky. You tend to get hung up alot...I seen people with braid and its not a fun story. I do seen people with mono leader with there braid but where im fishing obstacle behind u is a problem as well
  7. I am a on a budget around $150 or lower on a new spinning reel with a strong drag. I dont own a boat and I fish inland for stripers or any big game freshwater fish. I mostly dam fish and the water current is pretty strong (I dont know the speed of the water or the velocity)at most times. I usually use live bait (Bream and Shad) about 2-6 inches and use about 1-2oz weights. So all together with the live bait it is around 3-8oz +. Rod is 7'6 MHF and 7'6 HF I want a reel that holds 10-15lb mono test line and 12lb+ drag (stronger the drag the better for me). Thinking about Penn brands (battle II) or Diawa. I want a reel that can take a beating and reliable (im not the pretty or good looking type as long as it can get the job done). I was wondering what yalls suggest
  8. Yes Baldwin you are right. I dont teach, Im a undergraduate student at North Carolina State University
  9. You are looking at a fish a fish otolith (like a saccule or utricle in a human ear) though a microscope. How you tell a fish age is like counting rings on a tree. You can also tell the length of the fish though out its life span by just looking at the otolith, But you must have a certain program to do that. Large mouth bass otolith Example:The A are the years.
