  1. So after a week of using the $8 reel, its ok for pan fish, but the big boys forget it. The drag isn't that great. I ended up using some of the gears on a broken Shakespeare to get that one going again, and have a few spare parts around, since I lost the receipt, so its not a total loss.
  2. I admit it's been ages 8 years since I fished, and when I did, it was the worm and hook. I've used some buzz baits and larger crank baits, but never smaller cranks like minnows and shads, or even a light spin lure. How do you all suggest setting up for those? Seems weights defeat the purpose of the floaters or would distract from the spinners. Thx
  3. Thanks, I will. Getting to know the site.

No pigs yet, but the small LMB bite picked up in my local ponds so I at least started to put them through their paces. The first one's drag is smoother than the second. So far they both work well for their intended use. I picked up the $8 reel last night because one of my old reels is down. There is a definite similarity to the Shakespeare line that Wal-Mart sells there, but like you said, you can tell its cheaper material too. Overall, used it last night in the rain, its smooth, close to the other name brand reel, but not wear you'd like it to be. I'm wondering if the game plan it to eventually raise the quality and then "do away" with the name brand as part of an agreement. Still, $8 for a nice replacement/temporary reel that good isn't bad at all.
  6. I got a Shakespeare that's exactly the same as the Outdoor Angler $8 reel, which leads me to think its like the JC Higgins stuff from Sears, quality items remade under the store brand.
