  1. Follow up on the Rainshadow 1089's. Been busy and finally got full cork, seats mounted and handles shaped. Added tapped on guide set to one blank. Tied on a destroyed 3-16 7" Sidewinder (3.7 oz.) and tried it out in the local schoolyard. Very satisfied with performance. Just a gentle cast gets me around 225 ft. Specs: seat at approx 28" from butt. left blanks at 8'-10" with 1" trim off butt of blank. Collecting guide #20 at 26", 9 or 10 guides, last 3 being #8 single foot. #8 tip Rods are at local rodbuilders for winding now.
  2. I ordered a pair of SW 1089 's from Mick Batson last week with cork, casting guides, trigger seats. Over several phone calls Mick and Kary Batson were extremely helpful in helping me narrow down the selection of blanks. I plan to cast the large trout swimbaits for stripers with these rods. So I was looking for distance and capability to toss 2 to 6 oz. and still have some tip sensitivity. Got the blanks today and everything looks excellent. The SW 1089 got flexed and show moderate to moderately fast taper - looks good. Haven't wrapped a rod in 30 years - so I spent a day reading here and other forums before ordering. Thanks to all forum contributors for some good info. I'll set them up static, temp mount the Abu 6501 and then take them to the local school soccer/baseball field and try em out.
  3. Use the Abu 6500 as my standard for striper fishing below Hoover dam on the Colorado River. Maybe you figured it out by now.. Did you also replace the levelwind assembly? C4 kit has bearing and new levelwind. This may help a little with the fluffing. see link: http://www.heartland*******.com/other.htm Agree with Al the Uglystick rod may be some of the problem. Also ABEC bearings need a little break in time. You can change out the friction blocks for lighter ones, but then the thumb has to do smarter work. 100 ft into the wind with a 1 oz lure... may be all the Uglystick can do
  4. Suggestions for rod or blank to build up for distance throwing plastic trout swimbaits (2 to 6 oz.) and large jointed plugs - up to 12". Casting from a bassboat for stripers up to 50 lbs though average is around 15lbs. Looking for distance past 125 ft. Current setup is St. Croix 7ft. PM70MHF rated 3/4 to 3 oz. and Ambassador 6500 with ABEC 7 bearings and C4 kit. The St. Croix is just overpowered by the larger baits. Thanks
